Live an hour north of Winnipeg, Manitoba (often referred to, not-so-affectionately, as Winterpeg).

Work at a hydroelectric site almost exactly 1000km straight north from home.

Here's looking out the back door...won't be sitting in the deck chairs anytime soon. There are currently three 150-gallon stock tanks, upside down now, lined up against that little fence behind the small tree on the left. They're 24 inches deep/tall; they're there...somewhere...:)

And, yes...we don't have a lot of California-style long-hair surfer dudes 'round these parts...:)
For a bit of perspective it would be a nice comparison if you could post the exact same pic, but when summer arrives......as long as you're not in it sunbathing in just your undercrackers, lol.

Sure; why not? If I remember I'll do that.

I was about to clarify that there won't be any "undercrackers" involved...but then realized that sounded potentially even worse! :) So I'll word this more carefully: there will be no inappropriate activity or attire displayed. :)

Our weather over the past few days has been unseasonally warm. Only about 18°C but for March in our area that is well up on our norm.

The grass on the moorland has dried out and grass fires have flared up, probably deliberately.

For those Peaky Blinders fans, the episode in the latest season where Tommy Shelby goes into the "mountains", well the area where these grass fires are is the area it was filmed!

We've had a week now of temps as much as 10C, although it's now back down to well below freezing again apparently for the next week or so. This is actually just what the doctor ordered. If it gets warm and stays warm, all that snow melts at once and we would have flooding. A gradual melt is much preferred.

Esox, why would those grass fires be set intentionally? By whom? Is it some kind of control thing, or just plain vandalism, or...?

I'm a huge Peaky Blinders fan, and anxiously awaiting its return, in TV series or movie form. I have read that this has been delayed due to the need to re-film a number of outdoor sequences. Apparently, it was noticed during editing that many of those scenes, upon closer examination, showed a lanky fellow in black spandex, with a bedpan strapped to his head, pedalling a bicycle furiously in the background! Dang photobombers...:)

It used to be commonplace to burn the old brown dried out dead grass to promote new growth. This activity, called "swailing", was usually carried out by farmers, but setting fire to dead grass has been frowned upon for decades now.

The temperatures, although quite warm for us, are no where near warm enough to start a "natural" fire, so I suspect bits of kids who occasionally ride their trails bikes up there have started them.

I don't know how far you've got with Peaky Blinders, season 6 is currently airing on UK tele. I believe it's episode 2 or 3 that films around that burning grassland area, there's an old quarry up there. As the crow flies it's literally 2km from our house.

Lol. The very best thing that happened with cyclists a few years ago was that they've basically made it law now that you have to wear an helmet. That offers extremely welcome anonymity. You can look as ridiculous as you like, and I absolutely do, no arguments from me on that front, but no one has a scooby doo who you are, it's great, lol.

36F and two inches of new snow yesterday at home. It's actually a bit warmer right now up here at work.
