The part they always leave out of these stories, is that as long as one can stay hydrated, most folks can go many days, some many weeks, with no food - and survive off their own body fat reserves. We all have some, some more than others. The record fast is 382 days.

Angus Barbieri's fast - Wikipedia

Angus Barbieri (1938 or 1939 – 7 September 1990) was a Scottish man who fasted for 382 days,[1] from 14 June 1965 to 30 June 1966. He subsisted on tea, coffee, sparkling water, vitamins and yeast extract while living at home in Tayport, Scotland, frequently visiting Maryfield Hospital for medical evaluation. Barbieri went from 456 pounds (209 kg) to 180 pounds (81 kg), losing 276 pounds (125 kg) and setting a record for the length of a fast.[2]

The greatest risk when lost in the bush - hypothermia.

Undoubtedly I think the secret to his success was his starting weight!!

I've done fasting in the past if for example during Christmas, or a holiday, I've pigged out a bit too much and wanted to shed a bit of weight quickly to get down to my ideal riding weight.

I believe that after as little as 16 hrs without food your body starts on the fat reserves.

Anyway, back on track, storm Burt wasn't as nasty as some predicted. The rain has stopped, for now, the wind has dropped and it is quite mild today.

It depends on the individual, and how fat adapted they are, or aren't. By the 24 hr mark most people will start producing ketones, and continue to do so until there's an alternative source of fuel. For others, that are already fat adapted and not relying on carbs for fuel - it will take place immediately. I reversed my type 2 using this method. All good, but I still have days where I miss a dark rye bread. lol

As far as the weather, looks like maybe 8" of the white stuff thus far, seems to be winding down now. Sure hope so.

So...to put it into terms that our MFK-riddled brains can process...rabbits are yet another deadly thiaminase risk! Eat them at your peril!

Esox, the next time you get turned around in the trackless wilds of Yorkshire...as you slowly devolve into some pre-human feral state...you will want to keep track of those carbs and fats. :)

RD. RD. , would you say that you are currently at a typical level for snow on the ground at this point of the year? We have a couple inches that fell just within the last few days; up till that point a Snowshoe Hare out in the field would stick out like a cockroach on a wedding cake. At risk of jinxing myself, I'm gonna say that this is currently on track for being an easy winter for us.

I wonder if anyone here is a fan of the TV show "Alone"? It basically drops individual people off in remote wilderness settings, with a bare minimum of equipment of their own choosing, and then wishes them well. They are required to survive on their own for an unspecified period of time. The several contestants are in a similar environment, but far removed from one another and have no contact with each other. Any contestant can "tap out" at any time and call for a pick-up. The contest ends when there is only one remaining player, who only then learns that he/she is the winner of the prize (I think it's a half-million dollars?). It's just about the only "reality TV" show I can watch.

There was a contestant recently who was living like a king in the Alaskan wilderness; he had a shelter nicer than many permanent cottages, he had managed to procure a moose and a vast stockpile of smoked meat, he had a relatively easy method worked out to get water; this guy knew what he was doing. He also had a sort of persistent but low-key personality that served him well. He was definitely on track for winning the prize. Some of the other competitors were practically living like animals, subsisting on rodents and tubers, but he was eating steaks and amusing himself by working on little handicraft projects.

His nemesis was a wolverine, which had managed to repeatedly raid his larder and steal his entire supply of fat. The guy was eating nothing but lean moose meat, virtually no fat, and during one of his regularly scheduled medical/wellness check-ups he was told that he was essentially starving to death. I don't remember if he was pulled from the competition by the med team or if he just threw in the towel himself, but it was a very sad eye opener to see him leave. I'm pretty sure the prize went to someone who was living under a rock and eating mice squashed flat in dead-fall traps.

There may be a moral in there somewhere...? :)

We are slightly above average thus far, I think? According to the weather eggspurts that’s how it’s going to remain for AB. Colder than norm as well. :swear:

Seems quiet at the birdbath this morning. Huh

Alone and another classic is Naked and Afraid. Haven’t watched either in some time.

Young Esox and I tried to simulate this type of very scenario only last summer, you know, see how we fared when the going got tough in the great outdoors.

We decided to camp out in the back garden. All we had was our tent and plenty of warm blankets.

We had no food or water on us at all. We had to find our own sustainance. It's a good job the wife left the back door open so we could nip in and raid the fridge.

The thing we were both dreading the most though was that the battery would die on our phones, our only link to the outside world, but no fear, we charged them up plenty on the day of our intrepid adventure.

I found the whole experience quite enjoyable and even young Esox agreed that it was quite easy, even though the odds were stacked against us.

As much as I enjoy "Alone", I just can't tolerate "Naked and Afraid". I think it could better be named "Nude and Stupid".

So...did nobody call the cops when they spotted two naked males sleeping in the yard? How afraid were you?

Or am I misreading you? :)
