the wife wont read this after i told her i was sat at my desk crying my heart out and i didnt even finish reading it all. its good though Liz, very good.

we tried to get a rescue dog before we got nero our chocolate labrador. we went through a bunch of questions and once they got to my occupation we were disqualified from adopting from that shelter.
Apparently being in the military was a bad thing to these people who complain about too many dogs not being adopted yet there we were, a young couple looking to start a family with £40k+ a year coming in and a big house with garden and a huge dog walking field a mere 200m away provided by the base for that prurpose. but they said no way.

we have both grown up with dogs so we were experienced, settled into married life and had the insurance ready to phone them up with dog breed and age so cover was immediate but they said no. it baffled me because you couldnt really find a more suitable family for a dog to go into, other than a job change. so some shelters arent the magical places they are supposed to be.
we ended up buying our pure breed chocolate lab and wouldnt wish for anything but him for when we have kids. i dont think we could have done better.
i am sorry i upset you ... this is not meant to hurt or upset the people who already have the big heart... it is meant to make the ones that need a heart look into their heart ... it baffles me too why some shelters are so rediculious with their theorys of who would make a good owner of a adoptable pet.. sometimes it just does not make sense.. i hope you continue to look for a nice pet.. maybe just not there.

dont be sorry, it's a very good point of view. just a heartbreaking point of view made worse by the fact that it actually happens. sometimes we forget about the nasty side of things, like the pet trade, and it keeps us grounded to be reminded occasionally.

we actually gave up on getting a rescue because of that interview. it is how we ended up with Nero. we saw an ad on base and went to see the pups from a breeder. he took real care of his animals though, he was no rogue and im glad we went to him.
on a side note we do not meet the standard even now and im out the forces. its because we live in a flat, ground floor though, and our garden is massive. the grass alone is probably 160 sqm and that isnt including the excessively large driveway but because we live in a flat it automatically disqualifies us, doesnt seem to matter that its a ground floor connected to a huge garden.

Sad beyond words...

I should not have read this at work. I am usually not the person to tear up, but I couldn't help it. Teared up so bad that a contact fell out.

i know ...this is so sad i find it hard to come back to the thread... but it is a reality... and i hope someone thinking about getting rid of their dog.. reads it...

I posted the link to this on my facebook (hoping someone else would read it, or it would get re-posted for others to read)... I am so upset b/c the shelter i got my dog from 2years ago is now over flowing with dogs and last month the county had to put 500+ down b/c there is no more space for all the dogs coming in. They are getting purebred dogs turned in as "strays" (obviously they are not "strays"). Its very sad. I think they should put this on their front door so people can read it when they come to turn in their dogs. There is one I really want to adopt but I am in an apartment which charges me a lot of money just for the dog i have now I cant afford to do both. I would sneak it in but the shelter has to call and verify that we are the owners or that we paid all of our fees. I am very attached to this dog and I don't even know it and it breaks my heart that it isn't getting adopted out.. and I really hope it does soon. I check its posting everyday. =[

I am really glad i got the dog I did and was able to help her, if it weren't for those darn deposit per pet that set me back. I could afford (vet/food) wise to help another and the new place is big enough to provide a home and love for two. =[ stupid apartments.

I did the same thing.

Because this is really making me miss my two German Shepherds at home (at work atm) I thought I would post a pic to lighten up this thread a little.

4.5 year old. Missy.

This is Judge (all black) when we first got him. He is now 11 months and 87lbs. Missy, the one above is only 75. He is going to be a beast. Look at those paws!

i am glad you posted on facebook..one thing they should do is lower the adoption fees.. i can never understand how money is always the bottom line even in saving a life....especially at a time when things are so desparate.. so sad...

The adoption fee is extremelyyyyyyyyyyyyy cheap... $5-$10 if already fixed/chipped. Its the stupid apartment fees per dog that do me in really bad. The apartments here cost $300+ per pet and also have monthly fees. That is why I only has one.
