there are sooo many threads about the bichir really... biker, bisheer, etc etc etc
I stick to polypterus

So true. It is just way easier to say polypterus. Of course, some people pronounce that wrong too.

It's pronounced Um-boo-na, i didn't know either but i learned it a while back from a book i read. There's nothing embarrassing about it, it's hard to know every pronunciation when the only fish keepers you know are on the Internet:).

2.) Hikari (the fish food)

I say it like Hickory (like the tree)

Hikari- Hick-ar-e
bichir- Biker

i called it a *****-er but the lfs dint know what i was saying. then he told me it was a bick-er. then i heard 2 other stores say bye-chore. i think its bye-chore.

Oh, this reminds me. My brother bought a dragon goby from walmart because he thought it would look awesome with my oscar. I didn't want to keep it because they're brackish, so I took it to the LFS after walmart wouldn't take it back because it was still alive. The lady thought it was a bichir. She was calling it a "biker" and I had no idea what she was saying (I pronounce it "bisheer"). I explained what it was but still, I had no idea what a "biker" was until today.

Hikari is pronounced "hee car ee" with a slight "d" sound to the r. In Japanese i= ee a=ah.

Actually it is pronounced Buna (bu-na) as described in The Guide To Owning Malawi Cichlids by David E. Boruchowitz. The M would be silent but most english speakers do pronounce it (um-boo-na). So either way you pronounce it people are probably going to know what you are talking about. Mbuna in african language actually means "rockfish". As for Bichir I read once that the orignal way to pronounce it came from france and it is bee-sheer. for the fish food I use that brand but have no clue how to say it I just grab it off the shelf and buy it lol.
