People, PLEASE read the bill so that you can make an informed criticism, especially if you're going to write a letter or call your congressional representative. Going off of assumptions makes HR669 opponents look bad. It does not help us, it hurts us. Make yourself informed.
Here are the two most common misconceptions about the bill.
1. Cats, dogs, cattle, oxen, chickens, donkeys, domesticated varieties of ducks, domesticated varieties of geese, goats, goldfish, horses, llamas, mules, pigs, domesticated varieties of rabbits, and sheep, or any other species or variety of species that is determined by the Secretary to be common and clearly domesticated, are specifically excluded from this bill. THEY WILL NOT BE OUTLAWED.
2. Animals Owned Lawfully Prior to Prohibition of Importation- This Act and regulations issued under this Act shall not interfere with the ability of any person to possess an individual animal of any species if such individual animal was legally owned by the person before the risk assessment is begun pursuant to subsection (e)(3), even if such species is later prohibited from being imported under the regulations issued under this Act.
Cut'n'pasted from a copy of the actual bill. You get to keep anything you already have. You will not, however, be allowed to buy, sell, give away, breed(or allow to breed), or transport them across state lines if you move. If you move to a different state, you must kill them. I think this is where a lot of people got the idea we were going to be required to kill them.
Please though, people. Read the whole thing before you go off or you risk sounding like an uneducated member of a mob. That does not help us. Here, it doesn't matter, blow off steam if it will help you understand or steady you, but if it's in any form of communication with legislators it will get you labelled as a crackpot, and dismissed as quickly as swearing.
