Today begins the rehome of some of the amphilophus. I am supposed to meet up with someone for Red Devils and Midas this afternoon and then on Sunday with Jexnell Jexnell for a Hoga. This will only put a small dent in the 20 amphilophus I have but its a start.

Of the Petsmart Red Devils, the original one I bought first has the big thick build I like and is a keeper. Also the new white with orange will be a keeper. Even if it turns out female it would likely get a garage 75 to itself. It is just so cool looking.

With the Hoga, I am starting the thin down with the middle one that I believe is a sub-dominant male. Then I need to see if the bottom of the pecking order Hoga is a male. This is my likely keeper since it is calmer and shows more color than the dominant one.

The Sagittae are still growing so have not determined what to do with the 3. But will keep one male. The hope is for the two toned and one of the white to be males and would keep two.

The midas are the tough ones... pretty sure the largest is male and a keeper but not showing any special characteristics. Just a light orange. Then the littlest one that peeled has a white mask round its eyes might be a keeper. So 2 out of 10 that I might keep.

The goal is 6 amphilophus to keep in the 300. So far I have 1 Petsmart Red Devil, and 1 Hoga for sure. Probably 1 or 2 Sagittae, and 1 or 2 midas, with the other Petsmart Devil rounding it out.

2 Petsmart red devils and 3 midas rehomed today. 5 down and 1 more to go tomorrow. Moved the largest midas out of the 75 into the 300.

One of the smaller midas that peeled super early has an interesting white spot on it head. Was going to rehome the little ones until a saw this pattern

Most of the midas look like they are going to look pretty plain this one is the only one so far to have any distinguishing characteristic.

Interesting but there colors are every changing at this size so I don’t see it keeping that unique pattern.

Yeah I know, but can hope. This one peeled at about 1/2” while the others were more like 1”. I was totally ready to rehome these little ones but now I’m giving this one a chance to see if it turns out different.

As the next fish down on the pecking order he didnt have much of a chance to open up. Now that he has a tank for himself it will be interesting to see how he develops. Looking forward to your updates.

Ive got nice Hoga, Midas, and Sagittae but I am happier with my Petsmart “mutts”, lol

I've mentioned this here in the past, but my greatest regret over the many years that I have been keeping fish, is getting rid of a petsmart creamsicle orange/white midas that I owned years ago. It was ego related, thinking at the time that a "pure" midas would somehow bring me more pleasure, or be cooler than the next kid down the block. I was so wrong. I still own a rapps/conkel "pure" midas, a stunning 7-8 yr old fish that I would never part with, but if I could do it all over again I would never part with my mixed mutt. His behavior was off the chart, a real character. Good luck with yours.

My hope is that this Petsmart mutt turns out well

The other all orange Petsmart mutt is already a favorite.
