Maybe spoke too soon, lol. The Petsmart red devil realizes he is top dog and has been flexing his muscles a little. Started chasing the midas who is close to him in size. Much better than what the hoga was doing but typical cichlid behavior. Take out the bully and another steps up to take its place. I really need to add a couple more fish to help spread aggression. I can see the need to overstock to keep the peace.

I have always hated tanks where there is no calmness. As this project continues on Im more and more attracted to the one cichlid community tank. Really thinking about putting the trimac, 3 balas, 2 polys in the 300 and see how it goes and then keep 2 of the other amphilophus. One in each 75, and then call it good. The trimac is the one I am not sure about... will he play nice with the others? No other cichlids but how will he treat the balas and polys?

Still giving the situation more time but missing a calm tank for sure.
LOL, somehow when I see "Devil" calm isn't what comes to mind! :nilly:

Update on the 300.

The current amphilophus are 2 Petsmart red devils and 2 midas. No more Hoga in the house and all is calm... well as calm as cichlids can be. The largest Petsmart red devil is now in charge and is a much calmer tank boss. Does some light chases but nowhere near as bad as the hoga.

This was a quick snapshot of the dominant devil

Interesting that this is the only one with a nuchal hump... the other fish are all putting on size but no humps.

The 75 gallon tank is a war zone, lol. The growouts are putting on size and I might just move a couple over to the big tank. They constantly bicker and the Sagittae punch above their weight for sure, taking on larger midas with tons of confidence. Future trouble makers for sure.

Was in the middle of tank cleaning and decided it was time to add some more fish to the 300. A Sagittae and a true midas.

They are pretty small in comparison to the largest Petsmart red devil

The sagittae in comparison.

No issues with the new fish. The big fish did not even pay attention to the new additions.

Bad night.... Sagittae didn’t make it.

Likely eaten last night by a bichir. There is a 20” endli in the tank who I thought had been very well fed as of recently. Im now questioning the little midas being in there. Pretty safe during the day today since the bichir will just sit but at night all bets are off.

Went ahead and pulled the other fish out of the 300 and will go it out for a little bit longer of grow up time.

This is one I lost (in foreground)

This one was not 'white' but more of a cream color and it had red/orange in the lower part of its tail. What I liked about this one was its personality. Even though it was the biggest of the 3 Sagittae, it was the calmest and most easy going. The one I have in mind next is very white looking which I like but it has and orange spot on its nose.

Anyway will let the fish grow out for just a bit more time and try again when they have more size on them.

On another note... my Trimac recently was spooked and now is super jumpy. It sees movement and darts around. But it only does this when its tank is lit up and garage is dark. If all the lights are on or even if garage door is wide open and outside light is poring in, it has no issues. It iss afraid of things that go bump in the night. I am trying to find some dithers to put in there for a bit to help it build its confidence again. I was thinking of a convict or two.

The big guy says 'Hi'

The Petsmart devil is my absolute favorite out of the amphs in the 300. It bullies the two true midas but seems to leave the other Petsmart devil alone. This makes me wonder if that one is a female. Even though the big guy chases the others he does not bite or damages fins, just keeps them in submission. Nowhere near as bad as the hoga was. Most of the time the tank is still fairly calm.

A couple of other shots... nuchal hump really putting on size now

No plans to keep any spawn from them. Will let the big guy have his fun but the female will be pulled. Does not go with my male only plans in this tank.
