Ideas for an all Amphilophus tank....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I really love the look of hogas, I've never kept them myself but am intrigued by them. It's my understanding that they aren't a lake dwelling species and are more river dwelling. Their shape is a little different than other amphs as well. I'm really looking forward to see yours grow up.

Up here in WA we had a group of Hoga from a guy who went by 'madness' here on MFK. Not active anymore, has since sold off all his stuff but he had a line that were very gold toned. Then this batch I have were ones he obtained from a different source and they show a lot of red with some gold. This batch is from someone back east. Thats all I know on their background.

I was originally thinking to just keep one but with how rare it is to see a Hoga I may just keep them all.

Looking forward to seeing this tank progress. I'm growing out two Midas from COA with other viejas.

A possible future amph for my 300... a Petsmart “Red devil” mutt

As soon as he hit the 20L grow out he saw his reflection and started attacking, lol. Feisty

Good possibility with this one... will wait and see

So I need some advice guys. I have a buddy with 4 Chanco.... would the aggression level be considerably higher? These were actually raised with the hoga I got. I would likely only keep one of the Chanco in the end.

Decided do not do the Chanco. Found some more Petsmart “red devils” and got 2 more to raise out. So I can already tell that it will be two contenders out of those that look to have the most promise.
My buddy came through getting some true midas fry.... again the word is fry. Looking at fish that are 1/2” to 1”, but at least they are real midas. Hopefully he can grow the out for a little while so I can grow out the red devils for a bit., otherwise I need to set up another tank.

Been a while since I started this project and I have not updated, shame on me.

So here is what is going on. I have 3 hoga in the 300g along with 3 Petsmart Red devils. I also acquired 10 midas fry (pretty reputable source/ believe to be true midas ) that are in a 75g.

So it time for picture updates then:

The dominant Hoga in the tank, pretty sure its a male.

This is my favorite of the Petsmart Red devils. Bulky build and starting to get a little hump

Getting to the point in the 300 where Im already deciding which to keep but the rehoming process will start soon. Going to Portland this weekend so I will Stop by Wet Spot and see if they have any other amphs available.
