The severe pyramiding of the shells is caused by a poor diet. It is typically from overfeeding them. And as severe as it is in these turtle's it is not correctable but the diet must change as a poor diet can lead to internal organ damage and kidney failure...

What are you feeding them?
How much?
How often?

I have a 3 inch cooter and map turtle they get plenty of sun and I change tub water every other day but as far as feeding goes I am feeding daily and they eat it.

I feed a cube of blood worms or black worms twice a week . Cube size in pic.

Few medium earthworms twice a week. I raise the worms myself in bin with paper . Use them for fishing but the turtles love them.

Few pellets of Zoo med turtle food for growing turtles the other days (map turtle wont touch this).

The cooter also eats frogbit plants which I take from my ponds and add weekly ( it likes to sleep in floating plants).

How can I tell if over feeding them ?

I just thought as long as no food left over fine to feed daily.

sorry Louie I wasn't referring to your turtles!! I was talking about yertle the turtles two RES. I really don't know anything about diets for the types of turtles you keep. I do however know quite a bit about the RES's diet and the RES in general and this guy has been severely overfeeding his turtles to cause pyramiding like that. I have never seen such bad deformities on a turtle. Poor guys!!

Oh I know you meant his turtles but thought maybe you knew how much I should feed mine.

A friend of mine has a pond with them .
In fact my babies are from his adults. He just throws 2 scoops of turtle food in his pond every day but with my small one's I dont know how much they should be getting.

Thanks

I use the marineland c-220 on my 135gal w/o a problem and it does a good job at cleaning my turtles mess.

Other than your snapper how often do you feed your turtles?

I think you have sliders?

Louie,
Oh OK!! Sorry about that!! I have a link for you that should help you as I really don't know anything about the proper feeding of you little guys..
http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/caresheets.htm
You should be able to find what you are looking for here!!
I hope this helps. imho if your turts were RES I would say you were overfeeding a tad, but they aren't so I'm really not sure. I have found in my research that overfeeding seems to be a common problem. I know I overfed my guy when I first got him, but I did my research and corrected the problem!!

I always keep my tanks stocked with food. I dont have any other turtles right now but when I kept soft shells, I would give them pellets every other day and would always have several minnows in there. With my RES that I had, I would give them pellets every day as well as some aquatic weed (spirulina?) that is good for them that was always in the tank and a head of red cabbage each week. all of them turned out fine but i no longer have any of them ( i miss my soft shelled though). I also kept a few baby snappers (i would raise them to be a good size and then display them at the museum I worked at), those guys got pellets every day and a minnow or two each week. on occasion, a cricket but not very often.

The beast that I worked with at the museum (135lbs ally snapper) ate 2 lbs of fillet tilapia every day during the summer and one of the fillets was always prepared with some amount of calcium and other vital minerals. as the temps cooled, we weaned him off of food for the winter.

not sure how much that helps but its what you asked for. any more questions, let me know.

what the pyramiding looks like is that it was caused by not too much food but too much calcium. I think that he should move them to a vegetarian diet. no more crickets or pellets. the damage cannot be recovered but it will at least stop them from progressing towards organ damage or other internal problems.
