you just want to cover the intake with some type of prefilter. It won't be pretty but it serves a valuable function.

Don't touch them yet. Move dad and leave mom for another week. And then move mom with dad. She will take care of them better than he will.

As the fry grow, I would definitely get a sponge filter. Lee's Clover filter works great and they are cheap.

I counted 298 babies, but I think one moved so...

The netting will work. The whole point is to weaken the suction by diffusing it with something. What you have to be careful of is if the parents mate again. If you leave the babies in the tank with mom and dad, dad might kill the babies to make mom want to lay eggs again. I am simply repeating info I was given as I have never witnessed this behavior. Best to separate and keep as many as you can. You will be able to sell the little guys for at least 2 bucks a fish if you grow them up to about an inch and a half... 200 x $2 = cha ching... but don't get greedy and burn your bridges at your lfs. Of course, if you sell privately them you can charge whatever people will pay.

I moved the mom when I saw her kill a few babies while she was moving them to another corner for bedtime.

I was just kidding about my fish numbers.. there is no way to count them.. pure speculation on my part as to how many I have. Between 250 and 300 is my best guess as I did a partial count while I was moving them.

I would move dad, leave mom for a week. If you notice her moving them a lot, I would move her too. You have a ton of fish. Just wait till they get bigger and start to fill the tank... it is very rewarding and fun to watch. Sometimes our monsters get lazy, but not fry. They won't sit still for more than a few seconds when they are not resting. I would introduce a very fine food now, just to get them used to it. BBS or hikari first bites... keep the pics comin'. And congrats... you made it through the tough part. Just keep a close check on your params and do frequent wc's once you start feeding the babies regularly... 5 times a day at first... Mine get food every time I walk by the tank... not much... just a treat. They always eat it.
