Kristinn’s tanks

I love that wolf! Not really a wolf-fish guy, but that particular species is sort of calling to me. Passed on getting one when I had the chance last year, kind of regretting it now.

You were asking about frozen food treatment. The only potential danger with re-freezing food, whether for fish or people, is that if you forget about the fact that it has been thawed before you may think you have a longer window in which to use it than you really do. If a frozen fish is good to use for, say 48 hours after thawing...and if it has been thawed for 24 hours at some earlier point...then when it is re-thawed you don't get to start from scratch; you now have only 24 hours left.

So, thaw that fillet out, slice it up, refreeze in convenient portions and then only thaw them right before feeding. They'll be fine. I do it all the time, with fillets and whole small fish, never a problem.

And good luck with the outdoor tanks. If I can get away with it here in Manitoba, which is Cree for "Freezeyourassoffland", it should work in Iceland as well. :)

I’d wait till it’s a bit softer and not completely thawed out. Then cut it up. That way don’t have to freeze. I do it all the time and requires a lot of pressure. If you have to thaw then make it quick but should be fine. I’d also soak the tilapia in some vitamin supplement. Why not switch to a pellet? It should take without any issue.

What kind of vitamin would you recommend? I've been looking for one for my flowerhorn to use

I really do recommend the Erythrinus, he really has become an interactive wet pet now that he has the ideal conditions in his tank. Way more active than most wolfs I've met too, he is not the typical brown log that sits still at the bottom (he was an idle log when he was in a small barebottom tank, so environment matters). He sometimes shows amazing colours as well when he is in a good mood and the light hits him just rigth.

Thank you for that reply on the frozen food by the way, I really gained some clarity there :)

Thank you for the kind words FJB.

Speaking of the smaller tanks, one of them houses a small pair if convicts that started showing weird behaviour recently. They have always been very bonded and active and constantly breeding, so just normal convict behaviour. But now they kind of don’t eat (the female not at all it seems), they are both suddenly very scared of me and also stay away from each other almost completely. They just hide seperately almost all the time. Is this behaviour shift familiar sounding to anyone?

How big are they and how much cover is in the tank? They may be at an age where they are easy prey and become more skittish. Extra cover and dither fish helps to calm them down.

The tank was absolutely packed with cover when they started showing this behaviour but I removed some of it to observe them better, it was actually hard to see them from all the fake plants and stuff I had in there. They still have some cover now though. They are still very small, I might add some dithers, so far they have just always gone full on murder mode on other fish when breeding, and since they are always spawning I keep just the two of them in the tank.
