yeah i want to know what happened to that fishing trip down in south FL. never heard a word about it in over a year.

im curious too about these huge dovii in florida,

anyone catch one these huge record setters
you guys have claimed they are huge

I talked with them after their trip to Florida, they caught several large males though the largest they caught or saw was 18" if I remember correctly. I had all this in my PM's and deleted them. They never did post any with a tape measure next to them. Hmmm.

I remember this thread. It was an entertaining read. They also mentioned that they would give the location of their fishing expedition through PMs so others could try their luck. Did you ask for the location of their fishing spot too? I don't want to know myself. I just wondered if we'd see another thread like that from other members fishing for monster Dovii. I live in the wrong part of FL to find fish like that. I'll be in South Florida next month . Maybe I'll try some fishing while I'm there.

I have a question for Modest Man. You have seen Mel's in person, you concluded that you both came up with his male to be around 19" if I remember correctly. That was not that long ago right?

In his last video he stated that male was around 26". What do think? I think Mel is a honest guy and always seems to be a straight shooter and very knowledgeable along with many years in the hobby and great dedication obviously.

He estimated his Umbee to be 24" or so in a video. Later he stated he measured it at 2'. This topic comes up often and I always reference the best most reliable example I know of on this site. Mel drops by ever now and then but I'm sure misses many of the debate threads or rightly so ignores them.

Also a well respected hobbyist Mo has stated most reach around 19" I think. Just wanted to know what are your thought were on this? Thanks

It was probably close to two years ago now. I've lived in Oregon for a year and a half now so I know it's longer ago than that. I'm sure his dovii is larger now than it was two years ago. If it grew at 1/4 inch a month that's 6" in two years. Mel's a great guy, I never meant to bring his honesty into question. Speaking from personal experience, I tend to over-estimate size the larger the fish get.

I have no idea where in Florida it was. PM the guys that went if you want to know.

I knew you did not or ever bring his honesty into question and neither do I. Just a question. It's not easy to estimate a monster fish or even a little guy. I bet seeing a monster with that body makes it even harder. Sounds good and thanks for the response. Wouldn't a 1/4" growth at that age be a very good growth rate? I would not doubt it knowing his maintenance on that tank. I hope one day there is a thread for all of us to reference that leaves us no doubt to what is obtainable.

I don't want to know. I was just wondering if there would be another thread of some other members fishing there. Thanks.

I think that is pretty much true of just about everybody.....even those of us that are fairly accustomed to actually measuring our fish. Very seldom does it have anything to do with honesty. A major point: there is a big distinction between a guesstimate and an ACTUAL measurement. There is no doubt about some aqaurium fish being huge....but it's very, very easy to overestimate the length of very large fish.

On top of that, some of the larger species kept in aquariums are sometimes compared to 'trophy' specimens caught on rod and reel in the wild. Nothing average or typical about these specimens and really not realistic to expect that most aqaurium kept specimens will reach that size. I'm willing to beleive that many aquarium kept fish attain a size that is larger then the 'average' wild specimen.......but your 'average' wild fish is no where near record size caught on rod and reel!

The longest dovii in captivity, that I have ever seen in a picture, beside a tape measure, was 19". It was posted on this fourum a few years back.....but if I remember well, the fish was captured at a very large size from the wild. Realistically, I wouldn't expect most male dovii in captivity to get larger then 16"-20".....but I would think that is much larger then MOST get in the wild.

Best looking dovi I have ever seen. As much as I think about my dovi he is no comparison to this one and I am not ashamed to say it.
