Great pics. I love the display. I guessed a couple of the Dovii were around 20-22" in there. The blackbelts in that tank are stunning.

he was 20" a year ago, that rtc and tsn is 1m long. the GG was full size, and the tank as i remember was 10x4x4.

so reagan was on the money on those old pics:WHOA:

Should be easy to determine the size of that fish if you know what size tank it's in. If you know the name of the LFS, you could get the dimensions of the tank.

Looks like a big-un though!

why are there doviis and other cichlids in FL? Are they all natives? Im confused a bit now. Someone pls educate me.

They are feral. People have let cichlids go in the waterways and lakes etc there, or they have escaped from fish farms and reproduced with each other & other species. The warm tropical climate replicates where most CA's are from, especially further south.

People have also done the same with boas, pythons, frogs, iguanas & other reptiles and amphibians, as well as insects.

This guy although in public aquaria would make 28" if not more and is by far the largest dovii I have ever laid eyes on. He makes full grown giant gouramis look small. The devils in the pic are full grown specimens and large enough themselves. You do the maths.:naughty:

Dovii is a strong fish, not as cool as devil's tho. but this guy is amasing!!!

The problem with all these awesome dovii being shown in no one is actually measuring them. Granted, that can be a very tough thing to do in most circumstances, but without a measurement it's all assumptions.

When I first saw Mel's dovii I was positive it was at least 24" More like 26". 150% positive. But after discussing it and holding objects up to him next to the acrylic, I was 200% positive he was at least 20". Then after measuring said objects that we held up to him...it was pretty apparent that he was more along the lines of 18-20" tops.

Taking the photo Greenterra posted, I assume that is a devil pair. Larger male behind and female in front. A VERY good sized female is 10-12". So we'll say 12". She appears to be facing away from the camera at an angle while the dovii is facing the camera at a similar angle, so we don't need to adjust any numbers. I measure her at just under 1.75" on my screen. The male dovii I measure at just under 2.75", which assuming the devil is 12" would give the dovii a length of just under 19". Quite a bit different than the 28"+ guessed by Greenterra. Am I saying the dovii is 19" vs. 28", of course not. But without actually measuring we'll never know for sure. I over estimate all the time.

I'm 6'2" (74"), that means that dovii, if 28" would be a few points under 40% (37.8) of my height, or the length of my outstretched fingertips up to my shoulder.

I agree that an estimation is just an educated guess at best but I disagree on your perception of this photo. They are on different angles to the camera and also notice the dovii is curled up and in the process of making a turn making him seem shorter than what he actually is. He is also further away from the camera. I would estimate the female devil as you said around 12" and I can tell you the dovii was well and truly over 2x longer than her. I guess one has to see this guy in person but as you said without measuring, it is all subjective. IMO one only has to look at the jaw structure and mass of this fish to realize it is one of the largest around.

Where is that dovii greenterra? Will make a point of going there next time I'm in oz (not sure when that will be though!), it gertainly is a brute, and looks to be easily twice the length of the female red devil.

But I do agree with modest_man, its like I said in the thread about huge oscars, until the fish is out of the tank and lying on a tape measure its all just speculation. And despite the countless claims of 14-16"+ oscars I have never seen a pic of one with a tape measure to verify it.
