List all PEACEFUL Cichlids here

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's been my experience that angels eventually turn brutal toward other angels, irregardless of sex. I've had males that fight and females that fight, or bully. A single angle in the tank doesn't cause as much trouble as a group.

This thread certainly caught my eye, as I have always strived to maintain "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood" in my 200g. I read once that bocourtis were gentle for cichlids, so I looked far and wide and finally got one from Jeff Rapps. I have not been disappointed. He's about 10" now, and while he postures now and then, has never harmed a scale on his tankmates. Same goes for my rotkeil severum (8"). The other cichlids in there are:

electic blue JD (5" - very docile)
petenia splendida 6"
Chocolate cichlid (temporalis) 7"
tiger oscar 6"

All these guys mind their own business. I have some smaller clown loaches in my tank and none of the cichlids ever look at them twice. Come to think of it, I've had regular dempsey's in the past that were all quite peaceful. I think they need to get to a certain size then they simmer down - - juvies are psycho's.

So I guess I'd put all these species on the "peaceful team". We're talking cichlids so it's a relative thing. If any one was thrown in with a bunch of neon tetras there be some fine dining eventually.

I also have a bunch of large angels in a 55g that only show mild aggession towards each other, never other species. And then, no damage. I think they set the bar for cichlid passivism.

Welcome to MFK...

Probably best to create a new thread in the ray forum here...this thread is almost 2 yrs old and about peaceful cichlids.

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=116

also, contrary to its labeling, there arent any moray eels that are truly freshwater. they may do ok for a few months or years, but will eventually die from not being moved to brackish or saltwater. Mostly diseases that affect freshwater fish are what do them...that or starvation.

good luck.

the most peaceful cichlids Ive ever had is, keyholes and dwarf rainbow cichlids but even they squabbled between they selfs in truth

I think the biggest issue is defining aggression. Personally I do not view predation as aggression its just animals eating what they were intended to eat. I also wouldn't call a fish aggressive for posturing or chasing, for me a fish's actions aren't aggressive until physical alterations break out and if there is no damaged causedit would only be considered mild aggression.

wow my 6" is not peaceful.

I'm a little late to the party but I wanted to say that though my Keyholes are overall peaceful, they were jerks to my cories and they aren't breeding. They ripped off their whiskers to get to shrimp pellets and even ripped the skin and fin off a pectoral fin leaving nothing but the bone exposed. The cories have since been moved and the keyholes live now peacefully with serpae tetras and a BN pleco.

We just set up our tank.
Very nice one.
I love the S american Cichlid's .
Ive found:
peacocks
kirensis
keyhole
gold rams
blue rams
firemouths
bolivian rams
all seem to do fairly well together and in a semi aggressive community tank.
Currently they are small and housed with each other , red tail sharks, ghost knife , peacock eel and even a few zebra loaches.
No fatalities and no fighting. They like to bow up to each other to show dominance over rock or coral spots in our tank, but the smallest keyholes even hold there own and everything gets along fantastic
The bolivians think they are firemouths and school with them, welcomed into the firemouths homes.
The keyholes when threatened over territory or food simply turn to there side and flap there little fins..
The larger rams and firemouths tend to run away lol
Its actually quite comical.

I would say most S American cichlids can be housed just fine with semi aggressive tank mates.
Of course there are the aggressive ones to.
Education is key in this field or when setting up a tank.
