Hello all.

I've searched throughout this website and others and there seems to be a striking lack of information on mahseers as aquarium fish. I am considering acquiring a Tor putitora, but I can't seem to find anything about their care. All I've been able to turn up has been husbandry information for people who are raising them as food or sport fish.

A few things I've been able to deduce from searches on the internet:

-These fish appear to be able to be kept at tropical temperatures.

-They appear to grow slowly, but exact growth rates are unclear.

-It is likely that they are semi-aggressive...

-...But can be kept with other large, semi-aggressive predators like ATF and datnoids.

-They like oxygenated water with tons of current.

Can anyone point me to a care sheet for these fish or share their personal experience? These seem to be handsome, active predators that have the potential to be an attractive addition to a community of large predators. What I'm after is actual, observable growth rates, conditions people have successfully kept them in and real life observations on behavior.

Thanks all!

He's the one I'm working with to try to find some. :)

Pretty easy fish to keep. Nothing special you need to do. I purchased mine at around 6" couple years ago. He's about 20" now. Mine has never been aggressive towards other fish.

Good to know! This is the type of conformation I was looking for. What kind of mahseer do you have?

I got all mine from Wes. I keep them outside in a 1600g pond.
Had the spinibarbus for 2 years purchased at 14"-15" now about 23".
Neo Hex for 22 months purchased at 3" now 16".
Mahseers for 19 months purchased at 1" now 8"-12". I believe my larger ones are putitora and smaller ones are a hump back variety.

They are non aggressive as MyGiants mentioned but the moisquito fish and small bambusa I had in the pond are all gone. Very fast swimmers and always moving. I feed koi food. They also seem to like algae. All my collection are the cold water variety.

Sweet sweet sweet.

I'm hoping for Tor tor or T. putitora, I like the sleek, riverine look and the large jaw. Being active is a good thing IMO. They're going to go with ATF.

Do you think they'd do ok at temps of 80-85? I know koi can handle it...

That's a question for Wes. Like I said he has them with his tropicals.

I've kept mine in low 70's to high 80's. If you keep in higher temps good to have lots of air ration as they come from fast moving rivers.

Cool. I'm running 4000 gph and a bubbler in my tank now so aeration shouldn't be an issue.

I was hoping that the mahseers would fit in my community of current loving river fish, you guys are helping me feel safe about pulling the trigger on this. :)
