Metal monster 3k

Nice. My advice the more water you are able to run in the reactor the easier it is for the media to roll.

Thanks for the advice..im planning around 3-4" from the top of the 55 full of water. I need to raise my drain for the autodrip a bit in the other sump portion (u can see the hose coming out of the front) and possibly add/drill one more 1.5" transfer pipe for flow but thats no biggie. Im using an unconventional reactor media but i think it will work perfect. Just like k1 but larger nickel size and i already had it from a used tank i got. It also floats. Had it out in the garage so i forgot about it lol...ill post a pic its been soaking in bleach then prime for a week now as it was very old and pretty dirty. Im not opposed to adding mb3 or k1 in the future just cant afford it right now. The amt. Of media i have now overfills a 5 gal bucket so i think its just the right amount for the 55. Id rather be lucky than good haha...so it should work. The first portion of the sump will also hold 3 7" socks now instead of 1. Kinda worried about adding this much new media to the system at first, any opinions/advice on that? There is also a rena xp3 im leaving running during the transfer full of pond matrix and 2 8" sponge filters inside the tank. These r my bio "preps" to seed the new media but im still afraid of a large spike when the reactor is first put in.

As soon as I got mine I just threw it all in to get wet. I had a few fully establish bio balls that were in with it as well. Even though I didn't have it rolling yet I still wanted to get it going. I then got it going fully and I had some pond matrix in my sump left over from what i was using before that I left in for a while. Then I gave it a few months to get fully going and then removed the pond matrix and bio balls. Sad I have a bunch of pond matrix sitting here now, I jumped a couple more things with it and then I just didnt need it anymore. That's all I did. I would not worry about adding new media as long as you leave the old in for a while.

Ok sounds like i got the right idea...i always doubht my instincts lol. The rena im running with matrix will stay on the system permenatly just to keep it lookin crispy so that should hold me over till the reactor grows a good colony. Thanks for the reassurance my friend

That's about the size mine.
The difference is all the little ridges and what on the other medias. Adds tons and tons of more surface area. I understand your doing it on a budget and you should be fine with that stuff, later you can think about ordering a little more of the othet type to add to it just as extra why get rid of that stuff.

Thats what i figured ill just get it running and add onto what i have with "real" reactor media lol, thanks again for the advice. Once i make it through the holidays things should get better...i had to get those pima like an idiot so that didnt help my cause either. Still havent decieded where to stash them to growout. I spent about 2 hrs lastnight cutting all this media apart, as pictured some were in groups of 2-3 so i made them all singles.

Here is the size of this media I told you about. Its a little larger vs k1 but this is nice as it does not go through egg crate as k1 is really small and can go through egg crate and takes more to contain it.

Thanks didysis, thats def. My next purchase, ill have to give them a call soon here. I can see all the ridges ur talking about. After cutting all mine apart theres a bit less than a 5gal bucket so i need more regardless.
