Minimum tank size for managuense (jaguar cichlid)

Hi :)

I'd like to get one big fish to eat culls and aging fish. The biggest fish I keep now are Angels, a mbuna, and a peacock (not all in the same tank.) They'd kill the culls, but it wouldn't be a quick death.

How big of a tank would I need to keep a single managuense (jaguar cichlid?)

I've always liked them. I have an empty 75 gallon tank. Would that be big enough? Could I keep anything with the managuense? I like my fish to be content and display natural behavior, so I wouldn't want to crowd him.

Thanks,
S

A 75 could house a single female, a male would be pushing it but it's doable just crowded. I wouldn't put anything in with it they'd would be killed, my male claimed a entire 125 as his and utilized every bit

Are the females as nicely patterned as the males? I've seen pictures of beautiful managuenses, but I just assumed they were males...

How can you tell the gender of a young one?

The females retain the black bar pattern and the males lose it so they are a solid jag pattern for the most part. The females are still stunning fish. I definitely wouldn't do a male in a 75. My 14" male is in my 190 now and he doesn't allow any tank mates at all. He even tore up a 15" pleco I tried in there. And far as sexing it's near impossible at young ages.

I have a 14" jag in a 6x2x2 & personally would hate to see him in anything smaller. His tank mates are a Polleni, 6 Silver$$ & a couple of surplus Africans I have. A 6' tank has given me a few tank mate options but even if he was housed alone he would still need a 6' tank due to his sheer size. A 75gal would not be long or wide enough IMO.

Baddest fish I've ever owned. I had one that moved a 2 lb piece of slate to slay a convict who was hiding once. Also be careful when cleaning your tank with one, they are notorious hand and arm attackers.

I have to agree on a six foot tank for a mature Jaguar. The largest I have ever owned hit just shy of 16". In a seventy five gallon you would be better off with a smaller cousin such as a Freddy. Grammodes is a really good choice for that size tank too. Their nick name is mini guapote because they have the same shape but don`t get as large. Great colors too.

Just adding to what has already been said... but a 75gal would certainly not hold a single male.. you could get away with a female for a while but a a point you will(should) have to upgrade the tank! As for tank mates for a male jag... There is no ways you will have tank mates in a 75.. The jag will hunt every fish until its dead.. well this is in my exp and he was in a 125gal.. As for female jag tank mates(I have only owned 1, so this could just be a rare happening!).. I thought because it was female it would be less aggressive than the males i had... I WAS VERY WRONG! landed up beating a few sevs to death that were bigger than the jag!

But yes cleaning the tank when these guys are 10inches + is entertaining to say the least :P

A similar looking and aggressive predator that could live in a 75, you may want to consider because it is a tad smaller, and serve the same purpose might be a grammodes.
