More tank pics, updated

Where did you get the plants in patches tank? I like that artifical one! And your parrots are the reason why I'm even considering giving only one a home If a need was there as always was against hybrids til I see why people like them. Before it was like never in my tanks. Definitely waiting til Walmart carry the crayola pink sand again I'm setting up one hospital /QT 20g tank with pink sand and another one with purple ?

I got her plants and those in Kong's and Tango's tank on Amazon. The overhead (orange) vines are actually for reptile tanks but obviously they're waterproof. Kong's tank has the magenta overhead vines. There's also remnants of pothos vines mixed in. I try to complement the fish color with substrate and deco...they respond very well to it.

I like the faux bio orb plants...I think the round bottoms look cooler than the standard base.

Parrots are a box of chocolates....their personalities vary. Patch is a Diva, Tango a Kook, Kong a Thug, and Boss an Observer. Very intelligent and interactive. Patch may be a Diva but she's the number one butt kicker with a mouth of teeth.

I haven't put in her new sand yet...the Sandtastik just arrived the other day. I may try various mixture samples of the pink/blue to see what the best combo is. Mixing sand color is nothing like gravel, its a smooth color transition. If you mix too many colors you get a gray effect that's really rich. Since she's pink with orange/purple tones her tank reflects that. The deep blue sand which works for Kong's bright orange would be too overwhelming for Patchs' color and would make her look pale/washed out. She does have a deep flamingo pink phase but hasn't done that in awhile.

I'll post up the sand and mixtures.

The pink. You can see the grains sparkling in the bag like mica. The grains are heavy and similar to sugar crystals. Lots of space inbetween for plant drainage which reduces the gas pocket issues fine grained sand has. I've never washed any of the sand and it falls to the floor.

Would have swore the Danube blue Is purple if you didnt say it was a specific blue I'm always getting into discussions with others what color we really see.

The Danube blue is definitely blue-violet...Baja blue is like a cobalt blue. Danube is mid tone, Baja deep tone. Mixing sand colors is a science with unexpected results at times. You can even pick a color and mix it with either white or black sand for effect. I originally had the Apple Green sand in Patch's tank. It looked good against her pink. She loved it at first but it eventually proved a bit too bright and stressed her (she stopped going down to the bottom) so I mixed in both Baja blue and Carribean Blue (main tank color) to darken it. She was fine after that. However that mix is a bit on the dingy side and hides muck. Once you get into mixing multiple colors (3 or more) you can get a muddy result. This is the artist in me talking, lol.

Mixing sand colors is super easy. Some of the coolest effects simulate substrate in nature.

black/green = moss
olive green/ yellow = moss
green/teal = algae
dk green = grass
brown = mud, or river sand
red/brown = leaf litter
dark red = clay
olive/brown = leaf litter/mud
black/white = gray sand (volcanic)

3 color mixes work if you use black and white sand together with 1 color. If you really wanna get fancy and simulate nature you can mix gravel with sand.

Gray sand with black gravel (cuban cichlid, black nasty, dovii)
Gray sand with brown gravel (same as above, albino oscars)
Brown sand with black gravel (bichirs, tiger oscars)
Green sand with brown or black gravel (barbs, tetras)
White sand with brown and/or black gravel (most anything)
Black sand with red or dark red gravel (Midas, Devils, Parrots)
Dark red sand with black gravel (Midas, Devils, Parrots)
Black sand with white gravel (imagine a starry night cichlid with this combo!) or reverse it out, white sand with black gravel
Black sand with dark green gravel (most anything)
Gold yellow sand with black or brown gravel (sa cichlids)
Black sand with brown gravel (sa cichlids, some central)

Just sayin'. A few ideas.
