Another weekend. Time for the Goon City report.
I'll start transporting Pip's babies soon. It's getting to be a lot of fish for the 225...bio filtration can handle it but it's the mechanical that's becoming a nuisance. I'm cleaning the filters every 2 days now. 30 one inch babies skittering around isn't leaving a lot of quiet zones for the bigger fish. I'm going to try both minnow basket and the two net method. Not looking forward to fishing the little suckers out.
The usual shenanigans are going on. Brick (Oscar) has made his own quiet zone on the opposite side of the tank. He's shaped out a lagoon by pushing all the plants back in a semicircle. Nobody is allowed there except Boss the parrot. Everyone else gets run out. He's rooted out a tunnel to the back wall as well. In the mornings he now takes long 'bubble baths' by hanging over the air disk while bubbles go around his body. Since Brick has made a second pit on the south side, Boss has taken over the north side. Not too much fighting any more, but cichlids are gonna cichlid. Jazz (acara) can get a bit spicy at times. She'll poke the parrot in his belly. In retaliation Boss grips her lip. So one day Boss is shoving Corn (Severum) in circles. Jazz comes to help out and jukes at Boss. Then Corn goes after Jazz for butting in. After Jazz moves off Boss goes back to banging Corn around.
Feeding time is an adventure. Pip's babies swarm like a cloud grabbing pellet pieces and shooting away to gulp their food down. When they swirl around Brick he snaps at them but they're too quick. Tank size and plant cover are the only reasons they haven't been eaten at this point.
For some reason my syno Cash has been riding on Brick's back at times. He'll 'whisker' the oscar. If Brick's in the mood he won't do anything. This is the same oscar that body slammed Cash into the glass so hard I heard it across the room. Synos don't seem to be the brightest bulbs in the box.
Jazz picks fights with Corn that don't seem to go anywhere. Acaras are funny; if the other fish doesn't react or run, they don't know what to do. She has a rivalry with mama Pip and they lock up at times. Brick chases Jazz occasionally so she swings around to peck his tail but scoots away when he spins around and opens the maw. Works every time.
Bobo (chcoc) and one of my other hrps Mongo have their own little scuffles. It's pretty comical watching Mongo, all four inches of attitude and energy taking on a 10 plus inch chocolate with I dunno, 8 times his mass? Now Bobo (like all chocs) is a calm fish BUT she can be territorial. Her color changing intimidates the hrp even more than her size. So the little pink goofball shakes in front of her itching for a fight. She sits there like an anchor, snaps at him and he skitters away. Then she goes all tiger striped which freaks Mongo out so he scoots back into his log.
That is all from Goonville. Thank you and have a good night.
