Well, I can't count.

I THOUGHT there were around 30 of Pip's babies in the main tank. There's a total of 58! No wonder my filters stayed clogged with them and the other cichlids and 2 synos in there. It got to the point I'd be lucky to keep the water reasonably clear for three days.
Catching them was a lot of fun. It only took 3 1/2 hours and a complete teardown of the tank :swear:

They kept hiding under the corner filters, so I took them out. THEN the fry hid under the big fish. Big fish didn't cooperate with only 7 inches of water. I had to push them out of the way. Brick attacked the claw grabber when I used it to pull out all the plants. Knocked it right out of my hand.

So after all that plus a water change, a deep sand vaccum of the whole floor 4 times (first time in over 2 years) I discovered there's still 5 more fry in the tank. :wall:I'll deal with them next major water change. Water is clear as glass now. Some of the tatty plants Brick shredded were tossed. I kept the aqua scaping as similar as possible. My oscar had 100% attitude because of the changes to his tank. He rammed a boulder (I took it out) then swam around spitting sand at the other fish, something he had never done before. The jumbo log is now visible from the front so of course Brick checked it out and tried to go inside. Got his head stuck and that was about it.

Parrots love caves/hides and Boss is no exception. The minute he saw the log with no plants blocking it he went to check it out too. I saw the wheels turning...he tilted sideways to get in the side hole (no luck). Then he tried going in the wide end. Problem is his end is wider so that didn't work either. One he realized he couldn't fit he stopped trying. But he likes using the log as a perch to peep over.

Pics coming soon of the fry. There's four distinct sizes. Of the 58:

12% jumbo 1 1/2" super chunky
51% large 1"- 1 1/4" chunky
32% med ~1" solid
3% small 3/4" runts

I was shocked at how large a lot of the fry were when I took them out. Large tanks really do hide true size.

I like to think I’m patient with my fish…but I don’t think I’d ever be able to put up with my cichlids if they got that temperamental lol.

That's why I didn't help Brick when his head got stuck. Was pretty fed up at that point with all the antics. He got loose on his own without losing any scales, so that's a plus.

Pics.

I was surprised at the nice color of the fry. The blue sand and colorful background washed them out. Only time I noticed their tones was with a flash.

These are plant weights that used to hold 24 inch stems. Brick ripped them all out to stumps, so I pulled the raggedy pieces left over. I can use these to make custom plants later.

Here's the tote I set up for the fry. They haven't been added yet. It's placed below (bp) Tango's tank in my office. Fitted with large sponge filter and dual airstones. There's a skim of sand on the bottom from the main tank for bacteria. Will probably add another plant or two.

Genetic diversity is pretty amazing. Hard to believe these two are from the same batch! Pip's total including the 20 fry lost is 78...pretty large for a first time mom.

The jumbo is nearly 4 times the mass of it's sibling.
