Preparations for shipping out the hrp nuggets tomorrow continues. Both the tanks in my office are clear of babies (well one renegade slipped my sight). I'll do the 125 tomorrow. Squiggy and Brutus have been moved to the 125.
In Lazarus' tank there's Arrow, Matches, Flash, and the renegade baby. And of course Lazarus, who now has nice size. You'd never know he'd been deprived of food/water for 8 months to see him now! More on Lazarus is further back in this thread for those who don't know what I'm talking about. He's the miracle fish.
In the grow out are maybe 3 mid sized babies, Xena, Ace, Blackbeard and Neet. The tiny wigglers from Brutus/Ace seem to have disappeared during the water change/tank breakdown. We'll see.
I'll deal with the 125 tomorrow late morning or so. The only babies remaining will be Mica's group and they will be moved to the tank I'd gotten for Jazz. They're too small to donate right now.
So I put Squiggy and Brutus in the 125. Both are sons of Slade. As expected they were disoriented at first and shot to the bottom, but they settled in pretty quick. Being surrounded by so many schooling younger siblings/cousins probably helped. The 2 dominant males were the ones I watched for a reaction.
To my surprise the hyper aggressive Mongo had no reaction at all. Just went about his business among the mob. Slade left his area, looked his sons over and that was it. No attack or chase. Went back to his log with Harlequin.
It's funny how big Brutus and Squiggy looked in the smaller tanks. Next to Mongo and Slade they look half grown! (They both have fry still).
In case you're wondering how I separate the keepers from the donations I use a system. Here's how it goes:
1. Drain tank around 80-90%
2. Remove ALL decor.
3. Use 2 nets. One larger for grabbing clusters of fish, smaller one for guiding in
4. reverse use of nets for smallest fish Block 'em with the big net then corner/catch with the smaller one.
5. Patience!! These fish leap backwards over nets! You must nearly drain the tank or you'll be all day trying to catch.
6. Have 2 buckets. One donation, one keeper
7. Look at fish in each catch in the net. Scoop out keepers by hand and plunk them in one bucket. The ones I identify by markings are the easiest. The rest go in the donation bucket.
Just might let go of a jumbo or two in the 125, likely Hugo and Huey...they just hide most of the time anyway.

The holidays are here! And there are pics ,lotsa pics. Don't run away...major content. Grab a doughnut and some coffee.
In the growout, here's Ace (left) and one unnamed sibling. Ace has pretty and subtle pastel colors. She has no black markings and is an oddity. Out of Blaze/Slade.
The bad brothers, Mongo and Slade. They're fascinating and impossible to figure out. They beat on each other, display and chase. But nobody gets hurt and they coexist just fine.
