Thanks everybody. My minor in college was photography, so I'm always thinking about layout presentation. Bobo is the hardest one to capture because his color shifts are so fast (often during the exposure) he'll look 'muddy' or 'fuzzy.' Brick's the only one who photographs well with direct back lighting. Boss has the most consistent color regardless of lighting. Cloudy water/reflections are a challenge and mess up exposures.

Using flash washes out Brick and makes him look bright orange (flash is yellower spectrum..yellow plus red = orange). Neutral/cool light shows his true red (to the point where it glows!)

Flash doesn't affect the color of the acara much because the blue/silver scales reflect light instead of absorbing it (metallic). Same situation with white colored fish. Main problem would be haze.

Patch (BP) has two main color phases, hot pink and pale pink. The bright/deep color photographs easier, the pale color goes either pink or orange in pictures.

I'll use a second light source sometimes to offset shadows that are too dark to show details.

So, tips (for those of you entering contests)

darker backgrounds/substrates intensify color
direct flash often adds 'yellow' to bold color fish...red turns orangeish, purple goes brownish, blue greenish, white yellowish. Black fish are not affected. Fish with black/gray can look muddy.
bluish light makes white fish 'cleaner' and intensifies fish with pink, purple, or blue tones. Makes black/white/gray fish super sharp.
reddish/warm light will make white fish look more cream colored.

This is why fish colors can look different in pictures than what your 'eyesight' tells you. Cameras have no perception and see light differently.
