Most intelligent aquarium fish ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh my... i tot the topic was asking for most intelligent fish?

i didnt read thruogh all the pages, but came to the last page and saw the first post. (skipped thruogh it again.. =p )

for me, i feel that its my stingray and arowana.. actually i think most the fishes i have (discus, dats, aros, stingrays) are smart. they are receptive to my presense in front of the tank..

whereelse i think stupid fish would be the pleco. haha

Hmmmm, stupid fish. I'm back to the American eel, Any other fish would probably have figured out that leaving the tank was not a good thing after the first couple of times. I once had a marbled goby that apparently had all the brains of a hungry rock, it swallowed the end of the tank heater once, I guess it like the little flickering light. The splashing and lid rattling woke me up and I just pulled the heater back out, it had swallowed about 6"s of it.

Arows. They approach when they're hungry and snobs you when they dont need you.....knows a very good hunting system and can command respect in my pond. Tells me when to shop for those big worms and pellets.......

I think that all large fish have some intellents or maybe all of us that keep monster fish love our fish so much that we think that they are smarter then they are but thats what makes keeping monster so rewarding dont you think

I think the elephant nose is the smartest fish. Heres why:

It'sbrain size to body weight ratio is higher than that of humans.

Might not mean much, but still makes them really smart in terms of fish intelligence

That is true! The same goes for most "electric" fish if not all of them though, and a large portion of it is used to control their "shocking" capabilities. :P However, they do seem pretty personable to me as do most knifefish.

And comparatively, a cow's brain weighs more than a human's does, when it comes to weight of brain versus body mass.

I can't pick just one "most intelligent," since intelligence manifests itself in many different ways. But cichlids are, to me, more intelligent than most tetras, and I'd have to make mention that mudskippers seem pretty damn smart too.

cichlids are def. some of the more intelligent fish out there, behind the elephant nose, imo

Oh my, the topic went to outer space and back !
Glad its back on track now.

Loved the elephant nose theory. Very interesting..
