With those stainless bolts in the acrylic windows every 4 inches I would think you could probably use a slightly thinner window than you normally would for that depth, so 5/8 or 3/4 would probably work. Most tanks don't have any mechanical fasteners and the acrylic isn't going to crack. Heck with those bolts 1/4" acrylic might hold, but I wouldn't try it. :)

Bolts don't add any strength to the acrylic, only to how well its attached.

Acrylic slightly smaller than normal for the tank size doesn't need any extra strength to hold more pressure than would be put on it. The main issue is it flexes and pulls away from the seal. But no I wouldnt make a 20 foot tall tank with 1/4 inch acrylic. :)

That still seems expensive. How thick are we talking? still 5/8"? 4'x2'? $250/8 square feet is still over $25 a square foot. try acrylics.ca - they are in BC, but they may be able to help you find a local supplier. They quoted me $535 for a 4x8 sheet of 3/4" cell cast (o, yeah, make sure you get cell-cast and not extruded acrylic btw.) That's like $17 per square foot, and it's 3/4". a sheet of 1/2" from them was $365, or $11.50 per square foot. You could buy a whole sheet of 1/2 and do two layers for cheaper than your toronto quote.
