My initial sump failed and the new design did not really allow for filter socks. Before the sump failed, the socks clogged daily. I am now using poret foam in my sumps with no true pre-filter and have added an FX5 canister to the tank as well. I will be putting a 36W UV Sterilizer on the tank in the next week or so.

I am a devoted filter sock user and I heart them ever so much. I think the trick is to use the biggest sock you can find. I started out with 7 inch sock on my 125 and had it clogging in 2 or 3 days. i switched to a 16inch sock and it lasts a week. For each tank that uses socks I have a spare and every week I just swap them out and throw the used ones in the wash machine with a little bit of bleach. Filter maintenance for 4 separate tanks takes like 2 min. Another thing to remember with the socks is its best to have enough vertical space for them as well. If the sock gets scrunched up or folded do to lack of space then it gets clogged and you have to shimmy it around to expose more unused parts of the sock.

Geez Billy, is Blue Max paying something for your continuous endorsements? Ross sealed his tank with Pond Coat. It's an elastomeric emulsion that dries to form a flexible, impermeable layer just like Blue Max. It has no odor, maintains 850% elongation potential and isn't neon blue. What advantage does Blue Max offer here?

Given that Ross's tank has been running leak free with no problems why should he be considering Blue Max?
