Just discovered and read thru this, Congrats..... its amazing how similar that life is, is to life here in Panama.
Cost of living is close, (although not quite as "in"expensive) especially for stuff imported from the U.S.
Luckily I don't mind a certain amount or primitive, and don't mind not owing a vehicle.
You can walk across the entire length of the pueblo where I live, in about 5 minutes.
The fishermen bring fresh fish like red snapper, or mahi mahi to my door,, cleaned for less than $3 per LB, and tropical fruit arrives much the same way
If my wife kicks the bucket, or leaves me.... well......
Wives often leave gringo's here, some can't take the heat, or some, the primitive life style, and it never takes more than a few seconds, and those gringo men are instantly partnered up again.
The laws are similar here too, a Norte Americano, can start a business, but not get hired to do work.
But as a retired person living on a fixed income like a pension, or social security (I'm called a Jubilado here). there are built in benefits and discounts.
Health care and dental here is very inexpensive, but for major stuff, I go back to the states, to take advantage of the medicare I paid into, for over 60 years.
I know some people who fly down here for certain dental procedures, and even with flights and hotels, are ahead of the game.
I've been here (retired) for over 9 years, and would not (probably couldn't afford to) to move back.
I'm still a US citizen, and won't give that up.
