Try something like a 600-1000 gph pump and a diy filter sock one to three layers thick, made from felt sheets ($0.42 each at Wal-Mart) - i used to use them for water polishing, (600 gph on a 55gal, which polished it very quickly.) It should pull out most of the finer crap you have floating around. It may take a day or three, and you will need to change the filter sock a few times, especially at first, but it is working smarter as opposed to harder. If you want to get all the crap in the sand and not just whats floating now, stir the sand up every hour or so, till everything unwanted has all gone into the sock.
Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is the same idea I had with out the heavy lifting. I can just use the 2 filter pumps already plumbed into the tank.

Thanks

Yeah NP, i didn't even think of more than one pump, that would double or triple the efficiency if you add yet another - great plan.

Honestly, when I first used sand and had that issue, I just did 4x 100% water changes, and it cleared up enough that I was happy with it. Taking it out bucket by bucket and washing it is going to be a pretty big chore, and probably use the same amount of water. You can stir it up really good when you're adding the water back in for each water change and get the same effect.

Will 50 micron filter pad be good enough?

I will also go get some felt from walmart as "prefilter".

Thanks again for the advice, will post pics soon.

It should be; I never used anything that fancy. I just folded the felt over stitched two sides up and zip-tied it to the return.
It all depends on the size of the crap floating around in your tank. But fifty micron is really tiny.

This is almost like my build except I will be using a pond liner, and no windows. Mine is going to be a 8'x3'x2'

Most of the sand that will not settle is in the water column, I would just drain and refill a couple time.
Did a complete water change, and not am going to refill in the AM using the DIY felt polishing socks.
