PH is running at 8.2(ish) I have South American Cichlids that require softer more toward the PH neutral range. Shooting for 7.4 PH.

So, did this fish tell you this? (just messin with you man)

What species are you keeping?

Are they wild caught?

Are you trying to breed them? (not that it would matter)

Point is this:

99% of the CA/SA cichlids people are keeping would rather have consistent water then constantly changing water. It actually stresses them to death. What happens when you do a water change? You need to start all over again... This is not good for the fish. Leave it be, subscribe the the K.I.S.S. Method and enjoy your fish more!

Consistency is key to longevity, besides the fact if your fish were bred in waters here I can guarantee you the ph was not messed with for generation after generation. Captive raised fish do not even have the slightest clue what ph their ancestors came from... Even F1 or wild caught fish from the CA/SA area could careless what their ph is. Cichlids are successful because they are adaptive, incredibly adaptive. Let them adapt... :)

My LFS told me to do the Peat until the PH stabilizes. At one point it spiked to over 8.8. Am being told that the sand I used is leeching causing the high PH.

Pics to follow soon, gotta straighten up the mess the fish have made of my aquascaping :nilly:

You have to trust that I'm not trying to cause trouble, I'm trying to help... Let's do this one fish at a time...

Dempseys. First off, they are Central American and can definately thrive and spawn in 8.2 PH. I know because I have three in my tank... two of which have been raised here from eggs. JD's have been here since the 50's you probably have the millionth generation...

Green Terrors. Gt's are South American ( I also have these and have bred them here) I've got one in the big tank too, doing just fine in 8.2
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=502

Blood Parrots. BPs are from some crack aquarists back yard and they wouldn't have a clue what PH even means... LOL I'm not a big fan, can you tell LOL

Firemouth. FM is another Central American Cichlid able to withstand PH from 6-9, thrive and spawn... I just sold off the last remaining fry I had here...
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=65

Jewels. West african... LOVE the high PH... LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I've hemichromis crystiatus here, a breeding pair with a gaggle of fry and more eggs laid! LOL
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1348

Severum, South American also, what kind? I've spawned rotkiel and green... In 8.2 :)
Noticing a trend?
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=2449

Bumble Bee, mbuna from lake malawi where 8.5 is just fun.... LOL Bred them here about four years ago... In 8.2
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=845

I'm tellin ya, you've got common fish, none of which are particular about PH what's so ever... The proof is in my Breeder Award Points (B.A.P.)

So, that's:
2 Central American with a Reccomended, 2 South American, an African, a West African and a hybrid... That's quite the mix! I can dig it... All but the BP LOL Again, just me LOL

Just trying to help man, I've been at this for almost 25 years, bred a lot f cichlids and have NEVER EVER adjusted my PH!

Thanks Fishguy.

Wont stress about it then.

May have lost the Bumblebee though, Added him today to the big tank and his tankmates kicked the heck out of him. Will be suprised if he is still alive when I get home. In the hospital tank right now. Stress coated, and LOTS of air. We will see.

Thanks again.
