Stupid people buy pets they cant afford to take care of or dont now what there getting into. Do your research.....and dont buy something to big for you to handle.

The problem also stems from irresponsible pet stores ,mostly the big corporations that cater to the general public, that carry fish like pacus and sell them to people that otherwise believe the labels stating they get eight inches or whatever. I know smaller shops carry big fish too, but that caters to people who at least have their foot in the door when it comes to consumer knowledge about the fish they buy.

Just wondering, whats the humane way to euthanize a fish? I have parted with fish before by bringing back to my LFS. The owner gives me half of what he sells them for upon sale, and I just use it as store credit. How would one euthanize though? Just take it out of the water? Seems a bit cruel to me. If you want to get rid of a fish for whatever reason, why not bring it back to your LFS or post on MFK, Im sure you could find someone willing to take it off your hands.

Much better to find a home than kill it, but either choice is better than dumping it into your local waterway.

There are no doubt many koi keepers who have unwanted lower quality koi. They can't find new homes for the fish and as a last resort just dump them in a lake or river. It's definitely wrong, but it does happen.
I personally know someone that keeps goldfish in a pond and dumps them in the lake every fall. Sad.

Theres a big problem about this in Hawaii the Pest is the Common Pleco and it kills the native gobies (O'opu) and i think the law is that if we ever catch the we have to kill it and I've seen people throw them away in a rubbish can.........

Oh and anotherthing is that many years ago there was a guy raising Pirahnas in Hawaii then there was a big flood then all of his illegal fish(mostly pirahnas) goit into one of our main fresh water reservoirs and they populate like crazy and this is why Hawaii is not a good Bass fishing spot hehe

i was reading on one of the govt websites that details non-native sitings and captures. one of the bodies of water is a run-off retention pond near a dorm i stayed in one summer on the u of florida campus. i distinctly remember it being like a big fish tank filled with guppies, goldfish, pacu, etc. people are just plain careless.
