ok, i just want to be able to do it without pissing off my mom...lol

AAAAHHH there it is all right there. Depends how mom feels about fish. Is she a good cook? Had you started with the mom thing I would have got it. All about slight of hand put it in a siblings room then and claim your fish went missing and you think your sibling stole it to piss you off. Now mom is pissed at sibling, you get a new fish, and your sibling has to deal with the smell. That any help?

Just one question what made you put this post up in the first place. I highly agree with you I mean any one with half of a brain would do the same. Just curious

I couldnt agree with this policy more, however i think that like myself sometimes although no excuse, ignorance of the reasons for this is never stressed enough, or taught if you will to new hobbyist, certainly the places that sell fish dont tell anyone, usually and ive noticed that when told this sometimes in a very harsh way by someone on a forum, the Newby Hobbyist could feel threatened or harrassed. I think everyone WANTS to do what is best but the idea until explained properly such as in this post, sounds mean or jaded. I think the thought of the offender mostly is ...well this is a fish, it came from water somewhere i cant keep it any longer for whatever reason and i cant take it back to Africa, or wherever, so ill let it go in the local creek, then my concience is clear, and i didnt just purposefully kill a fish. I would in no way condone this behavior. But i can relate, its against our nature to just kill somthing we love. Soooo i for one will try to spread this word in a nice way, with a good explanation such as the poster of this thread has tried to do.

this is a sticky, so bumping it won't help.

But I can see what you are saying... so many people come like "I LOVE MY ID SHARK!!!!"

"He's in my 55 gallon!!"

and they get owned by attacks. . . like "he needs 10,000 gallon!!!" And they get sad and people are like "eat it, yummy yummy"

Easier said than done if you love your pet... Same thing happens with goldfish, only they are usually in a 1 gallon or 500 ml bowl.

You should need a permit to keep things like that, or at least some warning. EVERY pet store sells them for about $4 and say they get 8 inches. People are like "oh it won't get that big if that is max size." People should carefully chose what fish they keep. If they see a red tail catfish at the store, get the gigantic indoor pond before you buy one... do your research.

I saw a place on the internets about tinfoil barbs and there were comments: one person said;

"Tinfoil are great but need a big tank like 30 or 40 gallon"

Speaking of which,2 years ago my brother wanted me to release my solitary tinfoil barb into the wild because it was biting his fish's tail. Instead I got more of them.... problem solved. (kinda, 70 is a bit small for them) He probably wouldn't last a day in the cold waters up here, even in the summer.

in a pond in Flushing, Queens, a few Channa argus have been recovered.
In Clove Lake in SI Ive seen some HUGE Koi Carp and even a few dead Fancy Goldfish. A kid who i was fishing with netted a BLEAK, (small European cyprinid) no idea how THAT got in there. Supposedly there are Snakeheads in the deep parts of that lake to. I also caught a Golden Shiner in there, but I've only caught one of these otherwise common prevalent schooling fish. I'm thinking bait bucket release...?

i also saw what I believed to be Firemouths or Oscars in a drainage ditch in Punta Gorda Florida on the property line of a Church, if anyone's familiar with the area
