Thanks, its just he really flares his gills like cichlids do when they are mating or fighting but all of the time. As long as he acts okay i guess its nothing to worry about.

where did you get him? the store you bought him from might of had him in bad water and burned his gills. What is the temp in your tank? Also I would add about 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt for 10gal of water. it will help him heal if his gills are damaged. Nice oscar though

Petsmart in a horribly crowded tank, that may have been it. But its been months ago, and hes undergon plenty of salt treatment. The predator community tank hes in is constantly supplied with a little salt after water changes.

I was tempted and actually bought a white lutino w/ out any markings at petsmart. It looks just like yours Landonc, So I placed it in my 75gallon w/ a 12" male jaguar (supposedly harmless, only eats pellets). Later that night woke up to some splashings 2x, and the 3rd time found lutino oscar inside the jag mouth, still breathing, I smack the jag several times and it spit out the oscar. Unfortunately it looks like the tail broke off and breathing hard, and it died the next day.
haha.. there is no such thing as a harmless jag;)
