I find w/my floaters (lettuce and Hyacinth) that once the start growing they don't stop. And roots or leaves that die and fall off decompose and become more fert. for the plants. Only time it is a problem is in the fall when they stop growing. I'm assuming, that they will continue to remove nutrients as long as the are growing and healthy. The only time my water gets remotely dirty, and by dirty a little string algae on the rocks, is in summer and fall when the plants are not actively growing.

That bog is going to kick out a metric buttload of mud/silt as soon as you start flowing water thru it, so that will take a while to settle or get filtered out. The plants will absorb plenty of nutrients & do fine in your flooded gravel bog. The birds will keep attacking you, children, dogs, cats, etc. until you get a pellet gun & end their reign of tyranny! Just make sure its not the national bird of CR or something like that. It looks great!

I have a uv light for my 3,000 gallon pond that I used for the first year. I havn't used it now for about 8 months and the water is crystal clear. Yes I did need it for the first 6 months. I suppose that once my filter matured it took care of the floating algae. I'm thinking about putting a uv light in one of the waterfall entrances for a while. Just to give the water clarity a little boost.
for sure that would be the best idea just because you have it there does not mean you have to use it all the time, but, I know other people that have them in place to use them when need dictates.

personally I would have one in place just to make sure better safe than sorry

Not sure but I think you might be able to find pbass in some of the waters near Nicaragua.

The Rio San Juan is said to have them. Not sure about any regulations there in CR though as to transport of local fish.

He's doing both....

A gravel only bog, w/any soil washed away from the roots of plants, will take years to get filled w/silt to a point where it would kick out any debris to the pool. Maybe, if the bog has room, a bottom drain/clean out would be an idea if one wanted to flush out the gravel every other year or so. There will inevitably be some silt from decomposing leaves and dust that gets blown into the pond, but anal maintenace will keep it low.

Here's a picture of some of the rock work that they did to finish out the lines of the steps.

The water entering the bog will be cleaned by filter pads and filter brushes. This cleaned water will then be pumped into the bottom of the bog and up through the rocks. Any large debris should stay at the top of the rocks. If worse comes to worse I'll scratch the top with a rake and let the crappy particles flow over to the pool/pond and into the bottom drains. No big deal I hope.
