The red tide is algae or microscopic bacteria that look red, correct? I did a research paper on them a few years back but my memory is hazy.

Correct, fatal to both mammals and fish, reptiles etc.
Many years ago the KGB made a suicide pill which I believe contained red tide .

Russian spy and espionage organization, kind of disbanded with the fall of the soviet union, during the Cold War a number of interesting spy weapons were made including pens with knives or small bullets in them, a umbrella that shot a tiny shot filled with ricin (a very deadly poison), a gun disguised as a bic lighter etc

The apache is a black powder hand gun with a knuckle duster type handle and a foldable kris type bayonet, would make a good close range weapon(for that place and time). You really need to look at a picture.
Other weird interesting things:
A spiked gauntlet and shield combo with an attached lantern used to be used by nobles to stave off criminals at night, it's often referred to as a lamp shield.
