My grandmother has had 2 (HUGE) oscars in the same tank for who knows how long. Never has the gravel been vacuumed. Just a plain old tank, gravel, and a UGF. Everyone knows you can't tell your grandmother what to do. There still alive (i wouldnt call them thriving, but they are alive.)

I still have the family bible (no, the other one):
EXOTIC TROPICAL FISHES
by

Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod
Dr. Cliff W. Emmens
Dr. Duncan Sculthorpe
Mr. William Vorderwinkler
Mr. Neal Pronek

(hardcover) published by T.F.H. Publications
Copywrite 1967
Which my mom bought in 1968. Now if I quote from it I get flamed

This is a good topic. Back in the early 80s when i first started, it was all about undergravel filters and cornerbox filtters.. I didnt know about cycling until years later. I thought that filters were just there to collect poop .

I also never saw a cichlid except for the angelfish. All our lfs had back then were guppies, danios and the like. The coolest monsterfish ive seen were pangasius sp. sold as freshwater and i thought it was the shizzle.

Wow I thought I was the last person in the world to still have a slate bottom metal frame tank. Nothing looked better in the liveing room then the 10 gal silver tank with lime green gravel and pink and yellow plastic plants. By the way if anyone has an extra top I would like to buy it. I would very much like to do the retro thing. Its been 40 plus years since those first guppies. Might be fun to go back.

When I read your post, I thought my dad had finnaly figured out how to surf the web!LOL. Only kidding. I just recently set up my dads old slate bottom heavy metal sided 30 gallon tank. All it needed was a resiliconing to stop leaks, and a little water, and presto! fish tank. My father helped me set it up the way he did when he was in the fish field. Thanks for the good post, it caused my dad many a minute of mirth and laughter.

Technology has made fish keeping so much easier. All heaters sucked back then!
:iagree:

To control those things you had to keep one eye on a thermometer and one hand adjusting the temperature control 24 hours a day to maintain an adequate temperature range and if you even looked at them wrong the glass tubes would crack! Back then was the only time I had ongoing problems with temp. related fish stress, now I can't remember the last time I medicated a tank with anything but rock salt.
