Hi, yours could be a Peruvian variant B. filamentosum. They do have some different river variants. :)
No, its a cap. Look at the other, newer pictures that show the mouth. The mouth clearly has the W profile that is indicative of a cap.

Mouth shape is not a tell tale sign of this species according to Dr. John Lundberg who actually split these two species. If I could get a good photo of the mouth open to see the tooth patches I could tell the difference. Tooth patches are easiest most reliable way to tell these two species apart. Also coloration has some consistency as well with differentiating these two species being that the cap is significantly darker. This is shown very clearly with another members Cap. that was posted in this thread. I own the fish and have had it since it was about 2" and from my experience and research of reading nearly all if not every article that compares these two species I have concluded that this is a piraiba. It was collected from Peru so if collection points truly show variations of this species then so be it but according to all the reading I have done there is not enough research to 100% document variants of this species by collection points. It is very hard if not impossible for anyone to 100% verify this species through a photo/photos of the fish being that I do not nearly have detailed enough photos that can show tooth patches or the obvious gas bladder. Many are coming to conclusions about the species by the barbel lengths but that is 100% not accurate with this fish or any of my photos because the barbels have been damaged on multiple occasions and completely tore off twice from having a overly aggressive Cichla attempt to eat him. So barbel length with my fish is 100% inconclusive. Visually through photos color would be the only attempt for species identification and that is even inconclusive because there is not enough research to conclude if there is variants from one collection point to another.
