why do you think the op's fish is a capapretum? because it still has spots? Juvie piraiba usually don't lose their spots until the reach sexual maturity. I would agree however that yours is a capapretum, the maxiallary barbels do not extend past the adipose fin which is a feature of filamentosum as described by John Lundberg the person who differintiated the two fish as separate species read the link posted by chub-by for further information

The whisker you see was partially bit off by a tankmate several weeks ago...on the other side it goes almost to the tail.

These two are the same fish and about the same size...can't you tell?

And as for exoticfishguy your argument is not too factual or supportive of your argument. Please post pictures of your fish and be sure there are many detailed photos with all different angles proving your point. Otherwise your sitting here wasting your time and ours by trying to argue your so called knowledge and expertise of this fish with other clearly more advanced fish keepers that are proving their point with scientific facts to you. Maybe take a step back and realize your wrong and others are clearly proving their facts that you are wrong. I feel like your my wife that refuses to admit that she is wrong even though there is factual data behind these accusations claiming the truth about the species of this fish. This hobby is all about learning from others, researching and personal experience and there is ALWAYS someone that has more knowledge and experience than you. Learn from others so you don't make the mistake of creating an argument that just wastes other people's time to just prove you wrong.

How clear and amazing your tank looks. It just looks like a floating cube of water

Oh well thank you very much. I take pride in my fish as being part of my family and just as well cared for and fed as my own child and dogs. They are my "wet-pets" and deserve the best just like the rest of my family and I strive to provide that for them everyday. Thank you for recognizing that.

Tyjo, nice thread and the tank and fish are awesome. Same can be said about Exoticfishguy's fish.

In the argument, I notice that both Tyjo and Exoticfishguy clearly avoid describing the traits that led you two to your convictions. Lets have a nice, friendly, and detailed discussion, if you will (needless to say it's ok if you don't want to), that can edify all of us. What's the worst that can happen? We can always agree to disagree but we and others will learn still.

Nice capapretum

Filamentosum spots are always smaller than the eye.

Capapretum spots are larger. And they have that fugly nose.

Here are pics to compare. Even many vendors can't tell the difference

Color changes with many variables including size, age, environment, ect.
As adults they look very similar, and both get that beautiful silvery color.

I figured he would be happy to know he is not housing a true piraiba. Pretty hard to house fully grown.
