Piranha caught in South FLA .. This wont help the cause...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what is messed up is tilapia witch are one of floridas native fish mess up the fish population by over populating and nearly whiping out bass gamefishing in some areas is u ask me i would rather have piranha then thos stupid tilapia anyday in florida

How do Tilapia damage Bass populations? Blue and Mozambique Tilapia do not consume enough fish to cause a dent in Bass populations (by outcompeting Bass or eating baby Bass) and they eat live plants, unlike Carp, so they do not stir up silt on the bottom either. I couldn't be further from Florida, I have experienced none of this first hand... I hope I don't sound like I am challenging you, but please explain your statement as you have me curious now...lol

I believe they were stocked for waterweed control.

I meant to add, Blue Tilapia were also stocked intentionally in a few isolated waterways for waterweed control, as a gamefish, and as a foodfish. However, non-natives in Florida have a nasty habit of spreading...

If anyone in South Fla are interested in non-natives, Six-Mile Creek is the hotspot. It is downstream from a large fish breeding facility. There is everything in there supposedly, from Parachromis to Plecos to TSN...

"I believe they were stocked for waterweed control."

That makes sense I have seen them eat weeds by canal borders. Thanks

I went fishing today and caught some Talipia among other cichlids (catch and release/barbless hooks). The only fish I have ever seen ever impose its will on Florida's native bass has been the Florida introduced grass carp.

As you know some are huge and they travel canals as easily as lakes . I have never seen native bass or sunfish ever breed in canals as so hot from Spring to Oct in this area.
Even now its in 80s.
The cichlids at least here stay in the canals other than PB they are also found in lakes.

I think the toll talipia or any other cichlid take on native bass is close to zero . Now the construction run off that the state doesn't like to talk about that is another story.

"unlike Carp, so they do not stir up silt on the bottom "
So true .

The mozambique do make crater like nests but they dont stir up the bottom other than during actual breeding week and than its only in hot water canals . You wont find a bass near that type of insane heat (other than PB).

THIS SUCK ALL THOSE FISH HAD TO DIE BECAUSE SOME STUPID IRESPOSIBLE PPL

Hello:
It wouldn't surprise me either if it was a Pacu. But the Florida law says any look-alike species are also treated the same way. I say send bodies to museums first for positive ID and cataloging. But I guess that would be the "intelligent" thing to do. I mean, it's not like the residents in that lake are going anywhere (unless, of course, they are Clarias, HE, HE, HE!!!).
Have a Great Day!!!

wow i think that was uncalled for. do they know that MOST pirahna * i spelled it wrong i know* species eat plants!?

I really wish that Irresponsible owners wouldn't release they're predator fish in local ponds/lakes. It really would be nice to not have bans because people don't realize how hard certain fish are to take care of

what damage could 2 piranas do in a closed pond, really! killing all those fish because someone found a fish that looks dangerous
