Plant only filtration (why not popular in the hobby???)

interested to see how that pine goes, what lighting are you using?

Iv tried maples in the past, they "lived" but didnt really do anything, I blame my previous t8 lighting. I havent tried it with my metal halide setup now. I got so many plants I am not sure if I can handle a maple tree.

This pine, I believe, is too small to have much affect until a couple years from now, so we are going to put a bigger one in Aweshade9's 40 gallon. which also gets ambient light, but high bio-load. The pine in the pic was re planted.
 
005.JPG006.JPG008.JPG In my forty gallon I'm trying pothos, and gourds seeds, two have already germinated (these pics are a week old, so they dont show the new sprouts). I'll upload pics of the new pine tomorrow.

My top five plants

Watermint grows fast and easy
Pothos- once it gets established it can get 20 ft long
Spider plant- gives u something do do with the babies.
Moneywort- it is both underwater and out
Philodendron- similar to pothos

Picked up 2 plants from wally world for the turtle, $2.87 couldnt pass it up, this is why I am not allowed at stores.

I'm trying to read through this thread, but had a question in the middle of it. If I setup a refugium/planted sump, what are the best plants to put in a sump that will remove the most nitrates but won't over grow the sump so fast I have to constantly garden?
