Plant only filtration (why not popular in the hobby???)

Isnt this the basis for Aquaponics, plants filtering the water for the fish etc?

ps: sorry if some1 alrdy mentioned this.
 
I've been wanting to try this for my 72 when I get it set up. I'm definitely following this thread to see how this turns out

Hey guys I wanted to visit this again. I tried it a few years ago and while I think it worked well the roots of my English Ivy would rot under water and make a mess. I'm assuming you need to cut the roots back?

This is an old tank I experimented with it on.

Anyone use a separate growing container for the plants in the sump? Like an external refugium? I'd like to keep the plants out of the main sump.
