re-live the thread??It will take awhile to read again
Wonder who got the biggest curupira & aimara...
Not to mention marco.... seem to left out it haha..
Anyone got detail on marco?
I will be moving soon to a sand based tank. He is borrowing the Barca tank while I am treating him for an infection in quarantine.

I haven't got the biggest of either 13" Black and 15" aimara.

One day! We have all been there. It's not all bad. By the time you are ready for one they will probably be as common as Mala's and a quarter of the price aswell.

Interesting could I ask what factors make you think they are separate species? (apologies just seen your response above)

As it stands macrophthalmus and aimara are the same fish. They reviewed the description details of both fish and put them together as one species. By definition of both species i.e the charactors that define them they are the same fish. I don't know if there were any differences between them.

The description of a species is subjective really and the are lots of complications that add or detract from a species description. I still believe the two Black wolves I have are different species but according to the curupira description they are the same. I must pick that up again as I was in the process of talking to the one of the guys involved in documenting the lacedae group.

I think that may be curupira. For some time now Blacks/curupira have been imported into europe as macrophthalmus. There have been some reports of blacks getting close to 30", could be them.

Last I heard macrophthalmus has been discredited. It was used to describe an aimara after aimara was already a valid species. So they dropped it.

for macrophthalmus i notice it does not have the spot...
confirm not mistake by black wolf as i just got my 15" and when i
bring it home it look the same as the other only bigger...
To me I ID it base on the fish shape and marking....

As i seen some picture of big aimara they still have the spot...

If we have a few so call macrophthalmus picture and a few picture of aimara it would point out some fact.

The above is to my own understanding and might not be correct. :D

which macropthalmus are you referring to?
maybe some pics of the ones you've seen?
the problem is that variants of the same species can have very different patterns and body shapes.
look at the aimaras from guyana VS venezuala.
even the venezualan curupira look different from xingu ones (which i actually prefer.:D)
i remember only macropthalmus pics from ashdavid, which were aimara or lacerdae.
and also, like jelly said, curupira were brought into europe as macropthalmus.
very interesting debate.:D
