I have a breeding pair of xanthic carrier Jags (offspring from what I believe to be the only Xanthic Jag in the world (seen on MFK many times) and a Gold morph female) and I'm thinking that the male doesn't look like most male jags do at the size he is (~10"). Here is the pair, the male is the bottom fish.

So, I've recently been told that Jags have different patterns in different locations. I was wondering if anyone can hazard a guess as to which race these jags most closely resemble. I guess a good starting point is to ask where the Gold morph jags are coming from, as their mother was a Goldie.

Also, while I'm at it, does anyone know much about inheritance of xanthic genes? Got a bit of a dilemma right now as my friend has a bunch of 4" young from this pair and they still haven't turned xanthic, so we're wondering if it's a delayed response or perhaps if the gene is not simply recessive. Your thoughts please!

i am not familiar with locals of certain breeds of jags. however the way i understand it is the xanthic is something the fish is born with and shows from birth. meaning it doesn't go through a "fade" or "peel" to achieve this coloration.

please don't take this as fact. this is just how i understood these xanthic cichlids work.

I'm pretty sure that's incorrect. I have read numerous posts about fish that have literally become xanthic overnight. Often the fish start off with dark markings and then these disappear.

Anyone had xanthic sagittae or xiloensis from Jeff Rapps? What happens with these fish?

Not sure about overnight, but someone on another forum had their Parachromis turn colors from normal to xanthic over the course of 2-3 days ... so they say.

Look at boltys old threads, somewere is pics of his old male changing to xanthic over a period of time.
thats not true, shane bought the male when it was like 11-12" the xanthic only comes out in fish when they reach maturity (i think) so around 5-6" shane bought the jag off of some women who had him in a 7x1x2 tank in with arows and other stuff, when he picked him up, the xanthic was in a bad state and nearly dead, if it wasnt for shane, the xanthic would have died over a year ago. shane brought the jag back and after a few months of effort and TLC the jag started turning into what he is now.

also i think everyone will agree, the best bet of getting xanthics is if bluejax sells his female to me..

From what I've read there is a Northern and Southern morph.

Northern: Highly speckeld w/smaller spots all over body.

Southern: Lightly speckled w/large rosettes/spots on body.

The shape of the fish may also differ - I've seen some males that are absolute brutes - very stocky and short-faced. And I'v seen some males like yours that is more streamlined.

I would hazard a guess at yours being Southern morph. More accurately, Central America.
