Yes - you're absolutely right. The two morphs are able to interbreed, but there almost certainly is some genetic drift between ones in Mexico and individuals in the Central American corridor. Just look at Aquamojo's old boy(RIP) he is definetly a Northern morph. these pair will probably never grow to that state.
Aquamojo's Jag was a normal cross with a Gold morph!

The P. splendida x P. managuensis cross seems a bit of a leap to me. How do you explain the lack of black? And also, P. splendida tend to be orange rather than yellow. Just my opinion.

I imagine more people would have these if it were that simple.

mbunafishkeeper: you're not having the female. Sorry!

if we are going to call on people and what they say "ODDBALL" says it is no mutt.

and to me if you look at the pics in black/white it is a Jag ;)

very nice to see some pictures surface again. i looked forever earlier to try to find pictures on here and they all seemed to been removed or moved. i personally think its clearly a jag. so no arguments from me. all i did was paste what else was said about it.

that freddie was real nice thanx for posting that up. i'm sorry that my understanding of how the gene was is wrong.

i do have a question tho since we are still on the subject.

how come this is basically the only one xanthic jag seen in the world? that many many ppl have seen now but no others. or are there others that some of us haven't seen?

ill bet there's a lot more... but a lot of the people who have fish like this don't know anything about them... so i imagine no would here about them and they would just die off...

Well, I value the female carrier 'so much' because in theory both her and her brother carry the xanthic gene from their father, so assuming it turns out to be a recessive gene (and there's a better than average chance) 25% of every spawn should be xanthic jags. The only problem I have right now is that we don't know at what size they change to xanthic, so it would mean keeping as many as possible to large size until they turn and once they do (if they do) I will have pairs of xanthic jags, which will probably pay for most of the yearly cost of running my fish room by themselves.

I have easily got 150-200 fry growing out right now and Ian has close to 100, so providing the xanthic gene is inherited this way, there's a pretty good chance a xanthic will crop up in that lot.

That's why I value her so much!
