isn't one of the lakes drying up, causing many species to become endangered or even extinct? I heard one of the major african cichlid source lakes is in trouble ..... maybe rift? or was it vic?

It is Lake Victoria, which is why so many of those species are rare and or endangered/extinct. It isn't drying up it is dying because of pollution and also the introduction of the nile perch.

Um, I gotta ask. Which one is named "rift"?
Besides all three? LOL.

What is the source of the pollution and what ass clown turned nile perch loose in there?
And how come the good collection points for fish are 3rd world countries that wont do anything about the pollution?

I think its safe to say that most countries that are in a tropical environment ARE 3rd world countries. And if the people can't even get food or medical care, you really think theyre worried about fish?

It is important to never overcook any fish, including African cichlids, but I do not know that I would just go with rare. Maybe slightly past that.

They were introduced for a food source not realizing the negative effects they would have on the Lake. The pollution stems from lots of different things. Here is a good link about it. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/lake_victoria_plight.php
It is really sad and although they realize now what they have done to this Lake, they still can’t fix it.

Oh, one more good article...http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/lake_victoria_sick.php

Its starting to happen to a certain degree in Tanganyika.
At the north in Burundi, the most populated part of the lake, fish are becoming more and more scarce.
Run off from industry and farming in the burundi region is changing the water quality. Add to that fishing for food due to increased population, and the ornamental trade in the area, and all the fish in that area are suffering.

Tanganyika is a very different lake then Victoria.
Victoria is shallow and always had a thin oxygen layer.
Tanganyika is nearly the deepest lake in the world, with a much deeper oxygen layer, so it may be able to deal with humanity (interesting word) better.

It may not be the rarest of them but I have been looking for a Petrachromis Texas for quite a while.
