Sorry I didn't get to you sooner, but here's your answer
1. His tail is brown because he's a baby. Their tails typically change from brown or black to pink or red from about 10"-14".
2. He has gill curl, and you should check your water paramaters. Probably need to be doing more frequent water changes. What size tank are they in, and what's your filtration like?
3. You can feed them a grea variety of things. First stop feeding feeders immediately so that you are not contaminating them with potential illness. There are some catfish that are picky about what they eat, but these two are not those catfish. Silversides are fine, but you can try shrimp, bloodworms, fish fillets, and when really big(3'-4'), they may even enjoy the ocassional hotdog.

Could it live, or how long could it live? yes it could live in a 20 or 40 gal tank. For how long? Probably about 1-4 months depending on how fast that individual RTC grows, and how big it is when you get it. Mine is currently 27" I got him at 1" about 1 year 6 months ago.

1. Okay I understand yea because my friend has one and he is about 4 inches and his tail is bright red but Ill wait until he gets 14 inches and see what happens
2. My amonia levels are high at times and that when i know i need to do a water change. BTW its a 125 gallon and i have a fluval 405 and aquaclear 70 in the tank.

??? I also have one more question can i put a stingray in my tank with those two guys because i seen stingrays in the same tanks with aramatus so I am not sure??

the stingrays also depends on its size, don't get one too small that could fit in their mouths, and not a bigger one that could eat them.
besides that, I think its ok.
both my rtc got brown tail, and now are turning rose to red. not sure about their sizes today. Have to measure them again.

Ammonia shouldn't be an indicator of when to do a water change. If cycled properly and with adequate filtration ammonia levels should always read "0" unless it's after you feed your tank which sometimes all tanks will register some ammonia, but that's because the fish are using the bathroom after they eat. All other times it should be zero. Not sure what your schedule is, but if there is ever any uneaten food in the water take it out so that the water doesn't spoil. Also remember that if overfed both of these fish are notorious for vomiting in the water, after which a massive water change and tank cleaning must be conducted.

As for the stingray, like said before get one large enough that he can't eat it. Remember that a stingray will roll up when a RTC engulfs it. Someone posted pics of that one time. Make sure he's much wider than the rtc.

Oh, and the high ammonia levels is the most likely culprit of the gill curl. When my baby rtc started to develop it I started doing daily water changes of around 25% until it was barely noticable. Today at 27" you can't even notice it at all. I think it's fully reversed in him. The other RTC that I'm taking care of for redtailnobs has gill curl also, and I'm trying to reverse it as well. Good luck

Never knew about that, anyone have this pic ??? I'm really curious now.

Necro, just one doubt. Plants of surface like
Eichhomia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes can help reducing the level of amonia, nitrates and the filtration as well ???
