Tail color comes with time more than diet. It starts as a brownish black and turns red around the 8"-14" mark. Some are slower than others. I've always fed mine shrimp, and fish fillets, and the tail is striking at 28-30".
also genetics mate...one of my RTCs are REALLY dark in pigmentation...even the tail is a deep reddish colour. however the other RTC is much lighter and the tail is a brighter and lighter red than the other. they eat the exact same thing as well!

What's the high end of pH for RTC? I'm thinking of adopting a large fish as my goldfish culler.

i think if u just use really good water conditioner (eg. aquaplus and cycle) then ur water shud be fine. water in malaysia isnt even drinkable unless treated and my fish are all perfect.

if he noses the food he recognizes it but he just isnt into eating. he's a rtc he will eat eventually. sounds like stress to me. so long as water params are good i would say to wait it out.

That is a pretty common looking TSN Juvi, they all look similar to that from what I've seen. Yours will look like a typical one soon, just give it a little time to grow.

And by a little I mean it will be Monster in a couple months if taken care of and fed well.

at the rate he's growing he wont be a monster for a while. my rtc and my rtc x tsn are both growing 3x faster than he is.

he refuses to eat pellets. will only eat raw meat. where the hybrid took to pellets no problem. also the tsn was swallowed whole by my sveni pike when i moved him from my 20 to my 55. i had to chase that ba$tard around the tank with my hand for 5 minutes to get him to spit it out. but that was 3 weeks ago and he's still doing alright. (sveni go rehomed to the pond where one day the tsn might have a chance at retalliation.
