Ok I have been reading up on Savs lately and I cannot understand what they should be fed. People are saying they need alot of insects all through their life but I can't help thinking to myself WTF kind of insect do you feed a 4 foot monitor? So can somebody help clear up my questions on what they should be fed by age? (possible next purchase)

I'm sure dubia roaches would be fine. Although at that size it would eat em like potatoe chips, he would still eat em though.

Madagascar hissers are key to giving them a nice insect diet but you can also feed them baby quails, baby chicks and other assortment of prey items but remember that little 25-100 will cost you thousands in caging and food alone. It would be best to start off with ackies or another smaller type monitor (CBB only) before going to get a savnnah or any other large type monitors. It may seem 150+ for one but in the long run you still save money even if you bought a kim for lets say 1000 you still would spend less in the first year. A 4x2x3 foot cage seems more ideal fro most people then a 8x4x4 and up. For roaches go to arrons roaches (something like that) for good deals, these is where i got all my roaches for my various species i need to feed.

I feed mine crickets on occasion as well as boiled eggs but 80% of its diet is mice and he is doing just fine

Yes, rodents IMO are just fine as the staple. The key is to keep the temps up and give them enough room so they get excercise and don't get fat.

You should also pick up a temp gun online to make sure you have all temps correct before purchasing, they require very high basking temps to properly digest there food properly. 130F+ basking temps are ideal for them, if you need any other info dont hesitate to ask

Ok so I would be fine with a diet of mainly rodents and supplementing with roaches, birds, eggs, ect. I do know the long term cost and size of these animals and I have been looking into them alot. I am still just in the planning stages I have a few other things on my list that I have been looking at too so its still a toss up. I just like the big lizards though.

It would be best to have a staple of chicks or quails then mice/rodents. Mice have a higher fat content and birds are a healthier diet to go with, go to rodent pro for the best wholesale of frozen birds and mice

Ok sounds good thank you for the info I will keep that handy.

I would definitely consider starting a Dubia Roach colony. I started mine almost a year in advance so I would have a large, steady supply of roaches before I got my monitors.
