tempered glass is cut before strenghtened. it is heated up then cooled down, given it ten times the strength. i read bit about it once, yes it is stronger, but slight nick in it will shatter the glass just like car window.

Thanks, I'm hoping to get the door over the tank in the stand done today. I also plan on painting the outside of at least the top tank, hopefully the entire thing. Tomorrow I will silicone the glass into at least the top tank. It's going to sit in the shop at my school over the weekend, and I'll bring it home on Tuesday, and hopefully be able to start test filling. I'm painting the entire outside a semi-gloss black. I'm hoping this will allow all the attention to be brought onto the two tanks themselves instead of the stand etc.
Just thought of one more thing, I have three compartments in the sump for filter media. I was originally planning on using filter sponges, bioballs, then like some sorta ceramic rings or something. Due to budget issues (besides the glass, I also had to buy the gf a kitten for letting me build this), I need to make the filter media diy. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking a bunch of sponges from a dollar store, then some scrubbies, and then cutting up a bunch of straws. Does this sound like it would work out?
Thanks for the tips about the sponges, I'll probably just find some sort of soft foam block and cut it to size instead of sponges. I got the first coat of the out side paint on today. I used the new Behr primer plus paint, and wow this paint was amazing. It also went an extremely long way. I bought a gallon, but could easily get away with a quart with some to spare. Where I had the tank, I had to split the picture up, but it gives a general idea.
I also have the door painted, I need to put another coat of pain on, then I'll put the doors on, and put the glass in.

Buy a kitten? As in pay money for? Bah. Cats are free. I know someone currently trying to unload 4 or 5 of them.

I don't have pictures of it, but I siliconed the glass into the top tank today. It's still at the school sitting on its face with weights on it. It looks good, Tuesday I'll bring it home, and may test fill it, I may wait, I'm nervous to fill it. I hope it doesn't have any leaks.
