Setting up a 75 for a baby Oscar...tank mates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah that's my concern on plecos. the cat might be an idea.

what about the oscar, a raf cat and some other cichlid...maybe green terror or a chocolate...some say severums but idk.

oscar + green terror in a 75 is sth I wouldn‘t recommend
My gt started attacking the Oscar in a 107 gallons with about 3 inch. Didn‘t go well for long...

Simply too much waste from the Oscar to work with any other cichlid long term.

Bristlenose and Oscars together scare me. I feel like its just disaster waiting to happen once the Oscar gets bigger if it tries to eat the bristlenose.

As others have already stated, thats not going to work out long term. Too much bioload and potential aggression issues.....
if you could put a timeframe on that...how long would one expect to not have issues before getting to the point of needing a tank upgrade?

In Jexnell Jexnell ’s tank I believe that is a spotted Raphael cat.
Briatlenoses get just large enough to avoid being food, and seem to have this gift where no fish wants to eat them...I’ve heard of them with piranhas.
As for how long until the cichlids become issues is up to species. Oscars pack on an inch or more per month, so that gives you about 8 months before he is gonna start being to bioload heavy on his own.
Jacks and gts grow slower, maybe 1/4-1/2 inch per month (jacks can go faster), but once they hit about 4 inches they begin to get very aggressive.
Severums are slower growers pst 5 inches but the tank being overstocked is really up to how fast the Oscar grows.

GT's are nice looking, but I don't want to encourage problems like that. What about a less aggressive cichlid with the oscar and raf cat? and if a long term issue...how long before I need to be concerned?

Really a matter of 6 months on average before the stocking is just too much. It’s not about aggression, just how big and fat oscars are.

If you can hunt down crassipinis oscars I believe they are smaller, but still probably a solo fish, and quite rare.

If you can see yourself doing 90% water change every 3 days or smaller ones everyday (equal to 90%x2), it can be years until you get tired of doing that and that's with only 1 oscar in a 75g.

looks like my only real option is the rafael cat...just need to have something in there picking up after the oscar
