Smallmouth Bass Fry Care

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well at the lake you catch little bass with your hands but theres a few areas around where i live that after it rains alot little baby (anywhere from 1"-6") longnose gar get stuck along with baby carp, bass, sunfish, bullhead, channel catfish...almost anything in teh missouri river lol :)

Here's an update: The two SMB are growing steadily, but one is growing much quicker than the other and has emerged as the dominant bass. I removed the smaller SMB to a small tank of it's own to avoid fighting and fin nipping. The bluegill has become the alpha fish and will most likely have to be separated soon, too. All three fish are strong feeders and love eating frozen Hikari Brine Shrimp cubes (twice daily) and mosquito larvae (occasional snack).

I netted the SMBs out of my pond during toward the end of the SMB breeding season right before the fry scatter; I caught the bluegill by accident when I tried to catch a frog at a local lake lol.

I also recently caught 36 baby bluegills (about 0.75" long) in my pond by net and minnow trap baited with bread.

Any interest in either fish species? I can try to get ya some if ya want.

My biggest and last SMB baby died a few days ago :(; I was doing a water change and he apparently couldn't handle the stress even though I matched the water parameters and temperature to what he had prior to the water change. He was about 3 in. at the time.

I'm down to just the bluegill now, so not much going on as far as SMBs in my aquariums for me; I'm going to try to get some more from my pond later.

how did you get they juvenile bass and blue gill

the only way i get those fish is from fishing

It is quite common, when netting around the banks of ponds for feeders, to catch tons of LMB fry as well as various sunfish fry, Also, crayfish, tadpoles, misc. water bugs, etc. however, dont let a possum cop, catch you taken them home if LMB has a size limit in your state.
