The air from the air pump doesn't actually go through the sponge... so the air pump will not "refresh" the air bubbles in the sponge...

I agree with Pharaoh, when the sponges are new/stiff they hold air bubbles... as they break in and soften up those bubbles escape and they stay down much better... Don't hesitate to keep on squeezing it to help soften it up...

Most suction cups don't work very well in aquariums. In my experience it's just a cheesy way of attaching something. The higher grade sponge filters have weights designed in them to keep them down...
I use a lot of them in my planted and quarantine / hospital tanks. They all have a nice weighted bottom so floating has never been an issue...

Tcarswell... mine are weighted too :D

BPag52... the theory on sponge filters is as the bubbles rise, it carries water with it. Therefore water must enter the tube at the bottom as it exits the tube at th etop...

On your sponge filter... where does the water enter the tube from? Is the water entering the tube forced through the sponge first?

From the one picture you posted it does look like the tube needs to be crammed down in the slit in the center of the sponge... but I'm not sure if we are missing something from the single angle we have been shown...

I use hydor sponge filters with weights. I don't like anything with suction cups attached. I always have issues with suction cups getting stiff after a week and refusng to attach properly.

I assume water is being forced through the tube/sponge but I'm not too sure.

Oh ok I can see now.

you are fine its all hooked up right.

i am unsure why it did not catch the debris you were talking about. Maybe it has something to do with the floating as well. Maybe after the sponge gets seasoned it will allow more flow thru the sponge.

Just a guess.

I allways just drop some old ceramic media down the tube for weight and to help it cycle faster plus more bio filtration.

suction cups suck. I wish they made magnet attachments for all powerheads and stuff.

They do make magnetic attachments!

Whisper40. The sponge filter is rated for 25g.

Looking at it earlier I did see some debris stuck to the side of the lower portion of the sponge. Doesn't seem to have much suction to it though.

Sponge filters can be weird... not enough air and they don't cause the water to lift at it's maximum capacity... but too much air and the air takes up too much volume reducing the maximum water flow...

Judging by the video, I do not think you have too little air... possibly (but unlikely) have too much air... it looks like it should be efficient...

Seeing the filter in the link you provided I now also see how the tube attaches to the sponge, which is burried in sand in your set up.

From this angle I can't really give you any specific suggestions to make it work better... but don't hesitate to play with things and see if you can fine tune them...
